Float and Combine both come from good stock, especially the former, who’s a Nathaniel filly out of a mare who’s produced an Irish Derby winner and two Listed victors. On ground as treacherous as this, however, I’d prefer to side with a filly who’s got at least one run under their belts, ideally on similar going.
John Gosden has a fantastic record here at Yarmouth, winning with 50% of his entrants this year. Baring that in mind, Frankel filly, Frankly Darling should give a good account of herself. Yet, I’m always keen to swerve Gosden’s juveniles when they make their debuts, as they’re rarely fully wound up and the one to take the favourite on with looks to be TOO BIG TO FAIL (NAP).
Like Gosden, Mark Johnston has a strong record here at Yarmouth and he will have been pleased with his youngsters’ debut at Nottingham. Too Big To Fail started slowly from a tricky draw in stall one and was checked at a vital stage as she tried to work her way through the field. In the end, Franny Norton’s mount was too far back to challenge the winners, but Too Big To Fail made eye-catching late progress to finish fourth.
Johnson’s filly is a half-sister to Vivid Diamond, who won on her second career star and showed a liking for soft ground when winning the Listed Chester Stakes earlier this year. John Egan, who takes over in the saddle from Franny Norton, rides regularly here at Yarmouth and he will know the best position to take as the runners roll down the straight mile.
