Philip Hobbs doesn’t often send horses up to Wetherby, but he’s managed to win with almost 30% of his winners here in the last five years and there are two runners from his in-form yard sitting near the head of the betting.
David Maxwell takes a valuable three-pounds off the back of Jatiluwah’s, who will be searching for a fourth-straight victory since arriving from France. Despite that, he will still have to give over a stone to stablemate KEEP ROLLING (NAP) and it’s with Richard Johnson’s mount where I’d prefer to hang my flag.
Following a victory on his second start in a bumper last autumn, Keep Rolling made his hurdling debut at Haydock. Richard Johnson gave the 2/1 shot a confident ride from the front and the pair led the field by seven lengths going comfortably approaching the second-last. Sadly, a fatally injured horse blocked the run to the final flight, so the officials came out to wave the yellow flag, declaring the race void.
Hobbs then decided to give Keep Rolling one final outing of the season in a bumper at Newbury, but was caught out for finishing pace as the impressive McFabulous set out for home and trailed over the line seventh.
To see this son of Mahler stepped straight up in trip on his second hurdling debut shows his trainer has plenty of confidence in his charge’s staying ability and Keep Rolling was jumping well enough during that void race at Haydock to suggest he can achieve a strong level over obstacles.
