I’m surprised to see King Ottokar dropped back to a mile, considering he ran so well behind Sangarius in the ten-furlong Hampton Court Stakes. I’ll be watching to see if Biometric can build on his impressive win in the Britannia, where he picked off Tugenev in the final furlong. Frankie Dettori’s mount renews rivalries with his Ascot conqueror, but I doubt whether his front-running tactics will bear fruit here at Goodwood, especially after landing a tricky wide draw.

Fifth Position has a couple of decent runs in Listed company under his belt and could relish the return to a mile. Momkin could be an each-way player too, but he was powerless to deny DUKE OF HAZZARD when they clashed at the July Meeting and I’m going to side with Paul Cole’s charge building on that impressive triumph.

I was gutted when I saw how easily Duke Of Hazzard won at Newmarket. He was my selection at 40/1 in the Jersey Stakes at Ascot, where he finished an agonising fifth when there were only four paid places available. I took a watching brief in the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes, thinking any of the six runners could realistically win. Yet, the race turned into a procession for Duke Of Hazzard, who swept Momkin and Turgenev aside in securing a comfortable victory.

Cole’s decision to deploy blinkers for the first time worked a treat at Newmarket and Duke Of Hazzard will enjoy his return to Glorious Goodwood, the scene of his maiden victory 12 months ago. At 11/2, he looks the best bet in this wide-open renewal.
