Al Jellaby is a consistent, experienced sort, but he’s been well-beaten off this handicap mark on a number of occasions this season and he’ll need a career-best effort to get back on the scoresheet. Balgair has the ability to run beyond his odds, but I’m finding it hard to get away from ALMASHRIQ, who drops down in class and trip after a decent run at the July Festival and could be too strong for this field.
An impressive winner on his only two-year-old start, Almashriq kicked off 2019 with a decent fourth behind Fox Champion before clocking an RPR of 91 when finishing a neck-second on his all-weather debut at Chelmsford. John Gosden’s colt then made his handicap debut in a 50k Handicap over 10 furlongs on Falmouth Stakes day here at Newmarket. Almashriq travelled into the race nicely after a being held up, but couldn’t match the likes of Walkinthesand for pace in the final furlong, eventually passing the post a five-length eighth.
Gosden’s horses are in excellent form and only Charlie Appleby has a better strike rate on the July Course this term. Dane O’Neill too is riding well at the moment, recording six victories from his last 16 rides. Gosden has also chosen to employ a visor for the first time to try and eek out further improvement in Almashriq. This looks an excellent opportunity to open his account in handicap company.
