2:00pm AES Renaissance Stakes (Group 3) 6f

Gustavus Weston won an identical race to this over course-and-distance in August, seeing off both Beckford and Gordon Lord Byron to win the Phoenix Stakes. Joseph Murphy’s three-year-old is respected on the back of that but, considering he only beat some out-of-form sprinters and his closest rival was rated just 98, his eight-pound hike in the ratings looks excessive.

So, with the ground going against David O’Meara’s British raider Perfection, the stage looks perfectly set for SPEAK IN COLOURS (NAP) to claim the second Group Three of his career.

Joseph O’Brien is convinced this four-year-old is amongst the upper-echelon of sprinters. However, the results he’s secured at Group One and Two level paint a different picture. Speak In Colour’s runner-up finish to Mr Lupton over course-and-distance in May’s Greenlands Stakes is the best result he has managed at that level, with O’Brien even trying his sprinter over seven furlongs on his two most recent runs.

Speak In Colours has won both times he has been dropped back in class since a run in the 2018 Commonwealth Cup, with both of those triumphs coming on the six furlong strip here at the Curragh. O’Brien’s charge has also proven he handles soft ground, securing two wins on juicy turf during his juvenile campaign.

Being drawn in stall two wouldn’t be ideal for some, but Speak In Colours likes to come from off the pace anyway, so he’ll find it easy to slot into the pack from his inside berth. Shane Crosse’s mount sits five pounds clear of his closest rival in the ratings and will only have to give weight to O’Meara’s filly. He looks very solid at 11/8.
