Mabs Cross remains as consistent as ever, but didn’t run up to her best in the Nunthorpe last time out and underwhelmed when finishing third as the favourite in a weaker renewal of this race last year. Invincible Army is one of three making a quick turnaround having been beaten in the Sprint Cup last weekend and James Tate’s sprinter has to be regarded a danger.
Houtzen pushed Battaash all the way to the line in the King George and warrants a mention. Yet, I’m finding it hard to pull myself away from the fast-improving SOFFIA and Edward Lynam’s filly offers plenty of value sitting on 3/1.
Even Lynam would confess himself surprised with the way this four-year-old filly has progressed this term. Three victories on the bounce culminated in a demolition job in the Sapphire Stakes, for which she was awarded a staggering RPR of 120.
Soffia is four-from-four here at the Curragh, a track newcomers often find a little difficult to cope with. Soffia carried odds of 20/1 to victory in last year’s running of the Bold Lad Sprint and even managed to win the Ballyogan Stakes, over an extended six furlong trip, here earlier in the season. At 5/2, she’s my best bet of the day.
