When it comes to the National Hunt flat races at Galway, backing either Patrick Mullins, Jamie Codd or Derek O’Connor is definitely the way to go. Codd and O’Connor go head-to-head in Thursday’s card closing bumper and I’m going to side with the former to guide BALLYLIG (NAP) to victory over debutante, All Those Years.

Ballylig made just one appearance for Stuart Crawford last season, carrying odds of 25/1 into a bumper at Down Royal. Odds-on favourite, Andy Dufresne shaped like a very classy horse while running out a comfortably winner. Willie Mullins’ Golden Spread – who went on to win twice and take part in the Champion Bumper at Punchestown – trailed home a ten-length second, with Ballylig crossing the line just half-a-length behind him in third.

A move to John McConnell’s yard followed during the off-season and he’s done well to secure the services of Jamie Codd, who rode the winner of this 12 months ago for Martin Brassill. Ballylig handled the undulating, right-handed track at Down Royal well on his career debut and I expect he will build on that showing at Galway.
