There are a couple of interesting debutantes sitting near the top of the betting here. Meyer Lansky finished third behind Papa Tango Charly – a very expensive purchase for JP McManus and will now be trained by Nicky Henderson – on his only start between the flags. Waitonit looked as if he was going to go two better than that on his only point-to-point start, only to fall at the last when sailing to an easy victory.
Both will need watching closely as they make their first starts under rules, but I would have to give the advantage to SINGAPORE SAGA (NAP), who ran in a high-quality mares flat race at Cheltenham last season and her trainer has started this season in extremely good form.
Philip Hobbs’ filly carried odds of 14/1 into that bumper at Cheltenham and ran a fairly solid race, crossing the line eight lengths behind the winner in seventh. There were clearly some good horses ahead of her that day and two of them have come out this season and won over jumps, boosting Singapore Saga’s run significantly.
Hobbs’ has won with 20% of his runners this season, 26% over the last two weeks. He boasts an excellent record here at Worcester – with his 31 winners over the last five years returning over £56 to a level £1 stake – and Champion Jockey Richard Johnson, who rode Singapore Saga at Cheltenham, will once again be in the saddle.
