Akwaan has been pushed to the head of the betting here, but I think the favourite might be vulnerable. Dane O’Neill’s mount won nicely last time out, but he was well-beaten off a mark five pounds lower than this when he made his handicap debut at the start of the year and the quick ground here is a bit of a worry.
Kuwait Station has been dropping down the handicap rapidly and could take advantage, while You Little Ripper is of interest back over a mile. CAPE VICTORY is also moving back to eight-furlongs after labouring over a longer trip on his handicap debut and I fancy James Tate’s top-weight will relish the shorter trip.
Following two runner-up finishes on artificial surfaces, Cape Victory broke his maiden tag on his first start at Musselburgh, making all to secure a two-length win over a fairly modest field. Paul Mulrennan’s mount shot the start as he made his handicap debut over an unfamiliar ten furlong trip and the duo had to work hard early on to capture a prominent position. Those early efforts came back to haunt Cape Victory in the final furlong, where he faded back to third when it looked like he was going to mount a winning challenge.
Despite losing out, Cape Victory showed enough to suggest he could win off this current mark, given more favourable conditions. Dropping back to a mile looks a sensible plan for this son of Dawn Approach and the quicker ground conditions put the ball firmly in Cape Victory’s court.
