Both Starfighter and Fragrant Dawn will be stepping up in trip today, having run very well in defeat over ten furlongs the last twice. Starfighter in particular looks a big danger, but I still prefer the chances of market leader STARCZEWSKI, who has already proven his staying ability over a mile-and-a-half and Jamie Spencer looks to have an excellent chance of claiming another victory around one of his most prolific tracks.

After struggling for pace over a mile on his reappearance, the Magician gelding came very close to breaking his maiden tag in two races over ten furlongs – coming up a length short of a well-backed favourite before another narrow defeat at Chepstow. David Simcock then stepped his charge up to a mile-and-a-half and it looked to have done the trick, only for Starczewski’s late assault to be repelled by 16/1 shot, State Of Affairs.

A sluggish start put the favourite on the back-foot that day and he hung right a little in the closing stages, so there’s plenty more room for Starczewski to improve. His rating may have been budged up to a career-high 72, but his last three RPR’s were all north of that mark and the fact that his RPR’s have improved race-on-race suggests Simcock’s three-year-old is still on the upgrade.

Only Silvestre De Sousa has ridden more winners at Yarmouth than Jamie Spencer and he looks perfectly suited to ride Starczewski, who generally likes to be held up. David Simcock’s record here at Yarmouth is almost identical to Spencer’s too, winning with almost a quarter of his runners in recent years – stats which make it harder and harder to side against Starczewski here.
