Qaysar brings some solid form into this handicap and the market leader is respected, despite the fact he’s failed to produce his best form over trips further than seven furlongs. Ed Walker has fitted cheek-pieces on Baryshnikov to try and eek out an improved performance, but I still think it will be hard for Andrea Atzeni’s mount to contend, despite his weight-for-age allowance.

Wafy has been dropping down the handicap over the last year-or-so and could turn out to be the class angle in the race. However, the one I think has been seriously overlooked here is DAWAALEEB, who has returned to his previous winning mark of 89 and has the ability to run well beyond his current odds.

Last June, Les Eyre charge stayed strong to deny Michelle Strogoff and score in a handicap at Ripon. Since then, there have been several strong placed efforts – most notably in the Spring Mile Handicap at Doncaster – but Dawaaleeb has been unable to claim another victory.

Only once, in eight starts since his last victory, has Eyre’s five-year-old recorded an RPR of less than 90, a run of figures that puts him up with any of his rivals here. Usually, horses are punished for their consistency by the handicapper, but to see Dawaaleeb dropped back 89 is a chance not to be passed up. As far as I can tell, this is Les Eyre’s first runner at Newbury for at least five years. He wouldn’t bother sending Dawaaleeb all the way down Berkshire if he wasn’t convinced he could challenge for the win. 9/1 looks an excellent each-way price.
