Like many of JP McManus’ horses when they begin to show signs of decline, River Frost was moved to Ben Haslam’s yard during the summer and didn’t show any signs of revival on his stable debut at Southwell. Saint Freule is an interesting chasing debutant, but the top two in the betting – despite having to give their rivals 12 pounds – have both proven they can cut it over the larger obstacles and I’d be shocked if the winner didn’t come from one of the other.

Nietzsche got the better of TONTO’S SPIRIT (NAP) when they clashed at Perth in July, surviving a jumping mistake three from home to get up under the shadow of the post. Both Brian Ellison and Henry Brooke have an excellent record around this track and connections will fancy their chance. I, however, think Tonto’s Spirit looks well placed to turn the tables on his rival.

Following that narrow defeat, Diane Sayer’s seven-year-old finished third of four in a flat contest at Catterick, before returning to chasing at Cartmel at the end of last month. Tonto’s Spirit went straight to his favoured position at the front and Conor O’Farrell’s mount barely put a foot wrong, powering clear after the last to seal a comfortable victory.

Tonto’s Spirit was giving six pounds to Garo De Juilley, who was rated nine pounds higher than him at the time and Sayer’s second-season novice still managed to pull clear and win by four lengths. The favourite has previous here at Sedgefield, powering home from the front to win during his novice hurdling days and Nietzsche comes into this one having unseated his rider after a poor early jump on his most recent start. Tonto’s Spirit for me!
