The top four in the market here have been drawn in the first four stalls, which could spur the group on to make this a real test of speed and stamina. If there is a strong pace, which I suspect there will be on quick ground, then HARIBOUX’S confirmed staying power over seven-furlongs should give him the edge.
Hugo Palmer’s juvenile sprung a surprise on debut, carrying odds of 14/1 into the winners’ enclosure at the first time of asking. Some may have written that victory off as a fluke after watching Hariboux crumble from the front on his following outing at Yarmouth, but Jack Mitchell’s mount bounced back to winning ways just eight days later, comfortably seeing off some decent rivals under a penalty in another novice contest at Brighton.
Hariboux was then thrown in with strong-favourite, Visible Charm at Newmarket and Palmer’s youngster, again, was a little keen in the early stages. The Havana Gold gelding warming into the race nicely though, joining Visible Charm at the front a furlong from home before striding clear to win by four lengths.
Jack Mitchell dropped his whip when the time came to give Hariboux some encouragement, but that error didn’t prove costly, as Palmer’s youngster needed little encouragement to put the race to bed. Of the classier horses near the head of the market, he’s the only runner to have won over this trip on good-to-firm ground and he’s carried this sort of weight on all of his appearances to date. 9/2 looks a price worth snapping up!
