This contest should go the way of one of the two Royal Ascot runners, with Bill Neigh holding a slim advantage at the top of the betting. John Ryan’s colt won a bizarre three-horse contest on debut here over course-and-distance, where he was the outsider of the trio and won rather comfortably, before a respectable midfield finish in the Windsor Castle Stakes.
Unlike the favourite, VENTURA FLAME is still a maiden and crossed the line 17th at Ascot, compared to Bill Neigh’s 12th. Yet, Keith Dalgleish’s filly was beaten by a similar margin in the much-toucher Queen Mary Stakes and the fact she carries no penalty into battle here puts the ball firmly in her court.
Shane Grey took the ride as Ventura Flame made her debut at Carlisle, shaping nicely to claim second as a 14/1 shot. Dalgleish’s filly was even-less fancied at Ascot, carrying odds of 100/1 into the always-tricky stall one. As it turned out, horses drawn high fared much better than those in low numbers on the day and Ventura Flame managed to beat three of the eight horses who ran in the group along the inner rail, a respectable effort considering her price-tag.
Dandy Man’s progeny often put their best foot forward on firmer ground so, despite good-to-firm being a complete unknown to the two at the head of the market, you’d expect Ventura Flame to cope with today’s going. Her draw in stall three should be ideal and Ventura Flame will be gaining 12 pounds on her rival at the head of the market.
