2:25pm York Tattersalls Acomb Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) 7f
Viewers are set for a fascinating renewal of the Acomb Stakes and it wouldn’t be a surprise if a very good sort or two came out of this race. The one who appeals to me most of all is KINGBROOK, and victory for this son of Kingman would ensure Mark Johnston matched Sir Michael Stoute’s record tally of four victories in this Group Three.
Kingbrook faced a tough challenge on debut, locking horns with two Godolphin flag-bearers. Path Of Thunder and Encipher, who have both gone on to win since, lived up to their short prices by finishing first and second. Kingbrook was very keen on the early stages, but still caught the eye in third, finishing just a head behind the runner-up.
Johnston’s colt then carried odds-on favouritism into his second appearance. Yet, an upset looked on the cards as Richard Hannon’s Manigordo passed Joe Fanning’s mount. Like your typical Mark Johnston colt, Kingbrook failed to accept defeat, battling back in the closing stages to snatch a narrow victory.
Manigordo is clearly a promising sort, otherwise Hannon wouldn’t have handed him entries in in the Royal Lodge and Champagne Stakes. Kingbrook himself has an entry in next year’s Derby, suggesting his future lies beyond seven furlongs. Yet, he’s managed to win over this trip and the form of both his appearance thus far look rock solid.
On form and experience, Kingbrook is up there with the market-leaders in this race, so to see him carrying odds of 12/1 is a chance not to be passed up. He could be the best each-way punt of the day!
