Form & Verdict
Benefited from the leader's final-fence blunder to win Grade 2 novice at Ascot (2m3f, good to soft) last month but that was still a highly promising chase debut; had an excellent record here over hurdles (good second in handicap here two starts ago) and he's versatile ground-wise; leading claims.

Last season over hurdles ended on a low note at this meeting; solid for most of this term, switched to fences for last five starts and winning twice in small fields; put firmly in his place in Grade 1 novice events over 2m4f here in February and particularly at Aintree last time, but this return to a handicap will also demand a career best.

Experienced hurdler who won Grade 2 novice on chase debut at Ascot (2m3f, good to soft) in December and made it 2-4 over fences in warm little handicap at Exeter (2m1f, good) last time; ran well behind two of these in Grade 2 at Kempton in February but likely to be vulnerable in this company.

Form & Verdict
Won two novice hurdles last winter (soft/heavy) and was in with a chance when falling two out on his chase debut at Cheltenham (2m4f, good) in October; merely fourth at Exeter (2m3f, soft) since but he retains potential and could have a part to play in a first-time tongue-tie.

Off the mark over fences at the fourth attempt in Newbury handicap in February (2m7f, soft; Pic Roc second); also effective on good going; merely mid-division in the Jack Richards at Cheltenham since but he's back in a less competitive race here and he could tap back into his previous promise.

Form & Verdict
Point winner who was a promising novice hurdler last season (ran well over 2m4f here on soft); went close on chase debut at Sandown (1m7f, good) in November but needs to bounce back from a heavy defeat at Newbury last time, and he's 6lb out of the handicap today.

Solid record at Sandown was enhanced when he scored in good style over C&D (good) seven weeks ago, leading three out to get off the mark as a chaser at the fifth attempt; 5lb rise may underestimate that and he could also be open to further improvement; big shout.

Has a win, two seconds and a third from just six outings at Sandown; ran close to his best when runner-up over C&D in February, keeping on from the rear; solid claims once more.

Verdict

Topweight MARK OF GOLD made a very good start to his chasing career at Ascot last month, despite possibly being fortunate to win that Grade 2 novice, and he can make it 2-2 over fences at a track where he has an excellent record over hurdles. The lightly raced Lord Of Thunder could have more to offer and is feared most.[Ben Hutton]
