Won maiden hunter chase at Hexham (3m, good) last May; some good runs in defeat in handicaps since November, most recently 5l second at Sedgefield (3m2f, good), but he has plenty to find today.

Good-ground hunter chase winner; returned from break with two good handicap runs in November (both 3m, soft) but his next two runs were disappointing and he arrives here with a point to prove.

Express Surprise

11st 1lb

J: Ned Fox

T: Clive Boultbee-Brooks

Only defeat in his last four races came in a good-quality 3m4f handicap at Windsor; jumped well and stayed on best at Chepstow last time (2m7f, soft) where the front two pulled well clear; raised 7lb but Ned Fox takes away 3lb out of that; respected.

Back-to-back wins at Wetherby (3m, soft) and Uttoxeter (3m, good to soft) before finding a Class 3 beyond him at Windsor (3m4f), though didn't run at all badly; considered back at this level.

Completed his hat-trick over fences at Hexham (3m, soft), albeit in a race that fell apart at the seams; he's been plying his trade in Class 5s and now has to cope with a 9lb rise, but wouldn't put it past him.

Maiden hurdler but he's proving progressive over fences and landed handicaps (around 3m) at Market Rasen and Plumpton recently, showing a likeable attitude on latter occasion; up 2lb but he remains quite lightly raced and merits serious consideration in his hat-trick attempt.

Consistent since switched to chasing in the autumn and made all to score by 11l at Market Rasen (3m, soft) three weeks ago; should also be suited by this left-handed track and can make another bold bid.

Brother Boris

12st 0lb

J: Mr Cian Murphy

T: Lucy Wadham

Front-runner who bids to complete a Fakenham hat-trick after two wide-margin wins in two-finisher contests this year (3m5f, soft/3m, good to soft); the value of his form is tricky to evaluate and today's faster ground may not be ideal but, nevertheless, another bold bid seems likely.

Saw out the longer trip well to get off the mark here (3m5f, soft) four weeks ago; 6lb higher but has obvious claims and looks the one to beat.

Verdict

Brother Boris was left with little to beat at Fakenham but he’s a big horse who seems to stay all day and could easily go in again. However, this is a softer race than the one in which EXPRESS SURPRISE (nap) wasn’t disgraced at Windsor.[Alistair Jones]
