Form & Verdict
Very useful on the Flat in his prime and won four in a row over hurdles last August-December (1m7f-2m3f, good-soft); has lost his way in his three runs this year but he now drops into a claimer and is a big player if he can get back somewhere near his best; blinkers reapplied.

5-9 over fences, the latest win gained in very strongly run race at Cartmel (2m1f, good) in May; well down the field in two competitive contests since but in calmer waters today and has a fighting chance if back on song.

Flat background; made a successful return to fences (fifth win in this discipline) at Cartmel (2m1f, good) and didn't give himself a chance at Uttoxeter by racing too freely; wouldn't be a certain stayer over this far.

Returned from break with two low-key Flat runs this year but came from behind to win Cartmel chase (2m1f, good) comfortably by 6l when back over jumps last month; was probably flattered by the way that very strongly run race panned out but is now 5-7 over fences (including a C&D win).

Form & Verdict
Has a patchy record but he went close in a 2m3f handicap here (good) last month before a respectable fifth in a big field at Ayr (2m4f, good to soft) last week; takes a big drop back in trip but he's a key player on adjusted figures and is versatile ground-wise; respected.

Won a Class 5 handicap at Uttoxeter (2m, good) in November but he couldn't pose a threat at Kelso last time and is bottom of the pack on ratings here; opposable.

Showed benefit of latest wind op when winning twice at around 2m in February (good to soft/soft); slightly disappointing on latest outing in April, though, and needs to be back in peak form to have a chance off current mark.

A dual 2m winner and progressive over hurdles this season but he failed to translate that form back onto the Flat at Doncaster last month; he's the sort to bounce back here though.

Form & Verdict
Won a maiden and novice hurdle at Market Rasen (2m4f, good/good to soft) in 2022, but he's struggled over fences and hurdles in his two runs this winter; still relatively lightly raced and this is a drop back in trip but he stopped quickly before being pulled up last time and has some questions to answer.

Won twice over 2m4f in small fields at Market Rasen (good/good to soft) last year; similar form in a claiming hurdle one month ago but needs career best to take this; reverts to the cheekpieces he wore twice before blinkered on last two starts; has since changed hands and left Olly Murphy.

Form & Verdict
Useful hurdler and smart chaser for Joseph O'Brien but he failed to complete in his first five runs for this yard and was tailed off when dropped into a claimer at Leicester (1m7f, soft) last month; plenty to prove.

Smart chaser in his prime but absent since 38l defeat on stable debut at Sedgefield in November 2023; reverts to hurdling on a very tempting mark but it takes a leap of faith to support him.

Had some smart form over fences when trained by Joseph O'Brien including when runner-up in the 2019 Arkle, but not at the same level now and was last seen finishing third of five in a claiming hurdle for Alan Jones at Fakenham (2m, good to soft) in March; makes his debut for another new yard after eight months off and lots to prove.

Form & Verdict
Ran well for a long way when fourth in a Limerick claimer (2m5f, soft) last month and this drop back in trip could suit but he's still a maiden under both codes (0-17) and this looks a stronger race than last time; has some work to do with cheekpieces added.

Kept on for third at Worcester (2m, good) in August and should be fine over today's longer trip, but was well beaten (albeit in a higher-grade race) at Chepstow last week and has become unreliable.

Verdict

Archie Watson’s AL ZARAQAAN has lost his way this year but he won four in a row over hurdles in the second half of 2022 and has leading claims if he get back on track on this drop into a claimer. The main danger is Glentruan, who went close in a 2m3f handicap here on his penultimate run and was a respectable fifth in a big field at Ayr last time. [David Moon]
