Form & Verdict
9yo who has been better than ever this season, winning the Troytown at Navan (3m, soft to heavy) then runner-up in the Becher at Aintree (3m2f, heavy; not the first time he's looked good over the National fences); also won over 3m4f last February; comfortably won at 11-8 on cross-country debut at Punchestown (3m, soft to heavy) last month and, while he faces much tougher opposition today, it's easy to envisage a bold bid from this prominent racer.

10yo who showed career-best form in the first part of this season and transferred that improvement, and more, back to this C&D when winning a handicap in November (good to soft); takes on classier opposition today and the forecast deep ground perhaps isn't ideal, but the form of his C&D win reads well with the clear runner-up Latenightpass going one better here next time; could have a part to play if coping with conditions.

Clear runner-up in this race last year (soft) on his cross-country debut, behind stablemate Delta Work who had previous C&D experience; fair fifth in C&D handicap in December (lofty mark; lost his left-hind shoe) and his staying-on fourth over an inadequate 2m5f in the Grade 2 Boyne Hurdle last time (heavy) was very encouraging; Gordon Elliott has produced him at the very top of his game at the Festival over the years and he's firmly in calculations.

Below best this season and didn't jump well when well-beaten fourth to Coko Beach on cross-country debut at Punchestown (3m, soft to heavy) last month; however, it's possible he'll improve a bundle for that experience and he's been a class act in the past, winning the NH Chase here in 2022 (3m6f, good to soft) and runner-up to Galopin Des Champs in the Grade 1 Irish Gold Cup (3m, yielding) last February; in the mix if tapping back into that ability.

Verdict

Gordon Elliott has an excellent record in this race, as does jockey Keith Donoghue, and the Cheltenham Festival has brought out the best in GALVIN over the years. He was runner-up to stablemate Delta Work 12 months ago on his cross-country debut and last month’s staying-on fourth over an inadequate 2m5f in the Boyne Hurdle was a highly encouraging performance. The 11yo Delta Work is bidding to win this race for the third consecutive year and is feared most, ahead of 2021 Gold Cup winner Minella Indo who was a promising fourth off top weight in a C&D handicap in December on his cross-country debut. Coko Beach and Foxy Jacks have been in the form of their lives this season and could also be involved.[Ben Hutton]
