Turners Novices Chase Tips 2023
The opening foray of Cheltenham Day 3 sees the Turners Novices Chase Tips come into play. The race may be more familiar to some as the Golden Miller, and it provides some Grade 1 championship race action at the Festival. However, it’s a chance for the novices to shine, and in this Turners Novices Chase Tips preview, we cast an eye over some of the leading contenders going to the start.
Turners Novices Chase Probable Runners & Favourites
There’s just four runners for Thursday’s Cheltenham Festival action, which is the St Patrick’s Day celebrations at the racecourse. Our experts highlight some of the strong players in this year’s renewal of a race that has been won by greats like Vautour and Defi Du Seuil.
BOB OLINGER remains unbeaten over the fences, having made it two from two in the sphere with a facile victory at the Punchestown in mid-January. The Henry De Bromhead-trained 7-year-old was terrific over the timbers and hasn’t missed a beat since switching to fences.
At last year’s Festival, Bob Olinger landed the Ballymore by a comfortable margin of seven and a half lengths ahead of Gaillard De Mesnil, who could also line up in this one.
GALOPIN DES CHAMPS is another of the big players in this year’s Turners Novices Chase tips. He isn’t likely to let Bob Olinger have things all his way, and he goes for Willie Mullins, the leading trainer in this Grade 1 contest.
Galopin Des Champs opened his chasing career with back to back wins at Leopardstown, both by wide margins and with jockey Paul Townend.
Both EL BARRA and BUSSELTON will need to improve considerably to challenge the two at the top of the market, and it would be some shock if either finished ahead of them.

Turners Novices Chase History & Present Time
The Turners Novices Chase has been a fantastic addition to the Cheltenham Festival, and it was introduced only in 2011, getting bumped up to Grade 1 in 2014.
Turners Novices Chase tips look at novice chasers who will be taking on this 2m 4f (approx) challenge in which there are seventeen fences to get over on Cheltenham’s New Course.
Despite being a newer race, sponsorship has seen it change names quite a bit, going by familiar monikers such as the Jewson, the JLT and the Marsh Novices’ Chase. It is now the Turners Novices but officially registered as the Golden Miller.
Turners Novices Chase Jockey & Trainer Records
The leading jockey of the Turners Novices Chase is Ruby Walsh, who claimed three victories in the race before his retirement. Walsh’s wins happened in consecutive years, the last on Yorkhill in 2017. The leading active jockey is Davy Russell, the only rider to have won it twice.
The leading Golden Miller trainer is Willie Mullins, who has seen four of his horses get home first. But surprisingly, he hasn’t got one on the board in any of the last four renewals of this contest – the previous winner from Mullins was Yorkhill in 2017.
Gordon Elliott is the only trainer with more than one Golden Miller winner – Shattered Love and Samcro both landed inside the last four renewals in 2018 and 2020.
