15:30 Cheltenham Gold Cup – (Grade 1) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m 2 1/2f

Given his Cheltenham Gold Cup 2023 odds it wouldn’t come as a surprise to many should A Plus Tard gain a much deserved win in the race. The current ante-post favourite will no doubt be a popular Cheltenham Gold Cup tip for many punters to claim further big race glory.

Gordon Elliott’s Galvin got the better of A Plus Tard in the Savills Chase at Leopardstown and could provide the strongest test to Henry De Bromhead’s runner. Galvin was a winner at the Festival last year so can give the market leader plenty to think about.

Last year’s winner Minella Indo could bounce back from a couple of lacklustre performances earlier in the season at a course he loves. He’s won two of his three races at the Festival, with the defeat a narrow one length behind Champ in the RSA Chase back in 2020.

Other horses to note include 2019 + 2020 winner Al Boum Photo, who will no doubt be in the mix, and shock King George VI Chase winner Tornado Flyer. One thing is for sure, you won’t want to miss the feature race on the final day of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival!

  •  20/20 winners aged 9 or younger.
  •  12/15 winners were rated 166+.
  •  8/10 winners won at single-figure odds (3 winning favourites).
  •  12/14 winners had no more than three chase runs that season.
  •  6/8 winners were Irish trained.

The final field of Cheltenham Gold Cup 2023 runners is yet to be finalised but a quality field is assured and early entries for the Cheltenham day 4 showpiece sees 30 potential candidates throw their hat into the ring for the Blue Riband prize.

A Plus Tard will feature heavily amongst many peoples’ Cheltenham Gold Cup 2023 tips as Henry De Bromhead’s star bids to gain a first success in the race; but he will no doubt face some stiff opposition.

Barring injury Rachael Blackmore will again partner Henry De Bromhead’s star in the race, having been on board him in the race last year.

Jack Kennedy will therefore likely be on board last year’s winner Minella Indo, who could repeat Al Boum Photo‘s recent efforts in the race by landing back-to-back victories. Al Boum Photo will most likely be the choice of Paul Townend, who was on board for his 2019 + 2020 victories.

Willie Mullins has plenty of other solid candidates to choose for the race, with King George VI Chase shock winner Tornado Flyer and Asterion Forlonge likely to be in the mix.

Other notable runners and riders could be Venetia Williams’ Royale Pagaille, who was an impressive winner of the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock earlier in the year and will aim to improve on his sixth placed finish in this race last year. Dan Skelton looks to have a good chance with Protektorat, who could hardly have been more impressive in the Many Clouds Chase.

Of course with a few weeks still to go the complexion of the Cheltenham Gold Cup runners and riders could change significantly between now and post-time.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Favourites

A Plus Tard currently heads the betting as the Cheltenham Gold Cup favourite as he aims to build on last year’s runner-up finish in the race. He was an impressive winner of the Betfair Chase earlier in the season and could prove a popular pick for punters.

When it comes to Cheltenham Gold Cup betting however it doesn’t always pay to side with the favourites; Al Boum Photo’s win in the race in 2020 saw him the first winning favourite since Don Cossack in 2016.

Only nine favourites have won the Gold Cup since 2000, but on the other side of the coin the longest priced winner in the same was 20/1 chance Lord Windermere in 2014 and only two winners have returned double-digits so those horses featuring towards the top of the betting tend to do best.

Cheltenham Festival Day 4 Betting Tips

Away from the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the opening Triumph Hurdle is always a competitive race and Gordon Elliott’s Fil Dor will be popular, but the Irish raider could face a stiff challenge against the likes of Porticello and Iceo.
