1. KYPRIOS (Aidan O’Brien, Ryan Moore) 13/8

There’s set to be a new name on the Ascot Gold Cup on Thursday evening with KYPRIOS fancied to provide trainer Aidan O’Brien with an incredible eighth win in the event.

This colt is bred to be special, being from a family that breeders Moyglare Stud know well, his close relation Free Eagle claiming the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at the 2015 Royal Meeting.

He looked very much a work in progress at 2 and even as a 3yo, but has really come into his own as a 4yo, winning both of his starts and looking like a potential Gold Cup champion with victory in the Vintage Crop at Navan when accounting for the same owner/breeder’s dual Irish St Leger heroine Search For A Song.

A subsequent wide-margin Group 3 win came at odds of 1/10, so it probably didn’t tell us anything that we didn’t already know, but there’s certainly plenty of potential for improvement now this colt takes staying trips. Likely to be less opposed to this quick ground than the majority of his rivals here, it looks his for the taking.

2. Princess Zoe (Anthony Mullins, Joey Sheridan) 7/1

Tony Mullins has done a remarkable job with Princess Zoe and there’s no doubt that her connections will have kept her in training mainly with the objective of landing the Gold Cup.

Princess Zoe finished a respectable second in this race 12 months ago when she arrived in significantly worse form.

There’s no doubt that she’s truly at her best when the mud is flying, but that 28/1 second last year showed that she can handle a sound surface, and she once again won despite conditions in the Sagaro Stakes here last month – a registered Gold Cup trial.

Tony Mullins reported afterwards that he’d still left Princess Zoe with a bit to work on, so an improvement on that showing can be expected, and it was encouraging to see the Sagaro second, Quickthorn, frank the form in the Group 3 Henry II at Sandown next time out.

Had there been a deluge she’d have been a definite winning candidate here, but given the forecast is dry she’s expected to have to settle for second once again.

3. Stradivarius (John & Thady Gosden, Frankie Dettori) 9/4

There’s little to be said that hasn’t already been about the legendary Stradivarius and our excellent recent Royal Ascot Legends piece provides some insight into the now 8yos four previous Royal Ascot wins, which include three victories in this very contest.

He was held when attempting to emulate Yeats and claim a fourth successive Gold Cup last year when enduring a troubled run turning for home.

Stradivarius could only muster fourth there, and connections decided afterwards that they’d keep him in training for one more season, with another Gold Cup tilt likely to have been right at the forefront of their minds.

Unfortunately, however, Stradivarius isn’t getting any younger and defeats have been appearing more and more frequently on his CV in the last few years. A recent Yorkshire Cup win will have buoyed backers that Stradivarius can once again top the staying division, but that form doesn’t look anything out of the ordinary and whilst Stradivarius can head to the winner’s enclosure on Thursday, it’ll be to occupy third place, not first.
