Best bets for Wednesday – Tips for the day’s race meetings

Our best bets for Wednesday includes Hereford. Our best bets for Wednesday includes Hereford.

Brian Healy gives his best bets for Wednesday as he looks over the days’s horse racing action with tips for every meeting across the UK and Ireland’s scheduled fixtures.

The aftermath of Storm Ciara continues to wreak havoc on the week’s UK and Irish horse racing fixtures and the elements have claimed the scheduled jumps fixtures at both Wetherby and Fairyhouse to leave only Hereford’s meeting to fly the flag for Wednesday’s jumps racing action.

However Hereford’s fixture also needs to pass a Wednesday morning inspection before racing can go ahead.

There is also all-weather action going to post at Southwell in the afternoon on their fibresand surface, while Kempton are racing on polytrack under the floodlights on Wednesday evening.

Hereford (jumps) – 1.35 – 4.50pm (7 races)
Southwell (flat, aw) – 1.45 – 4.35pm (6 races)
Kempton (flat, aw) – 5.00 – 8.30pm (8 races)

Brian Healy looks over all three of the day’s surviving (at present!) racecards and gives his race-by-race tips and best bets for Wednesday ’s horse racing action.

1.45 Southwell – PRINCESS HARLEY (85/40, Unibet)
2.40 Hereford – CUBAN SUN (6/5, Bet365)
2.55 Southwell – BADAYEL (5/6, William Hill)
3.10 Hereford – AYE AYE CHARLIE (6/4, Bet365)
4.00 Southwell – AMAZING AMAYA (9/2, Bet365)
4.50 Hereford – WITH PLEASURE (11/4, Ladbrokes)
5.30 Kempton – MERRY VALE (11/4, William Hill)
6.30 Kempton – BOLD SUITOR (5/2, Paddy Power)

(2.40 Hereford)

CUBAN SUN (6/5, Bet365) finished an encouraging runner-up on her first start over hurdles at Doncaster over the Christmas period. But while Karen Morgan’s charge wasn’t able to back up that performance next time, she did have excuses and could be worth chancing to bounce back.

The Havana Gold filly was beaten three lengths behind Fantastic Ms Fox on her debut, and her subsequent run is forgiven with her having lost a shoe in the race which saw her step up to Listed company.

The winner looked a useful sort, and she had split that one and the third horse home on her debut so could be worth giving another chance following her mishap last time. This is certainly an easier assignment and no surprise if she were to post a better effort now.

(3.10 Hereford)

AYE AYE CHARLIE (6/4, Bet365) looks steadily progressive over fences, bettering his finishing position each time in his three runs to date where he has taken in some strong races.

Fergal O’Brien’s charge proved no match for Pym on his latest outing at Cheltenham in December where he was beaten the thick end of twenty lengths. The runner-up from that race has since run well in defeat and the unexposed Midnight Legend gelding could have further improvement to come now he tries handicapping.

He returns from a break here and while his jumping hasn’t always been polished, he could do better here as he continues to find improvement and an opening mark of 132 might not overfaze him on his handicap debut given he remains open to better still over the larger obstacles.

Fergal O’Brien can saddle a Hereford winner with Aye Aye Charlie who carries the NAP and features in our best bets for Wednesday.

(4.50 Hereford)

WITH PLEASURE (11/4, Ladbrokes) might have went for home too soon when weakening late at Warwick on his last run, going clear from the second last before fading on the run-in following a mistake at the final obstacle.

John Flint’s charge has yet to open his account over hurdles and he spurned a good opportunity in that last run which was his first for a couple of months. The handicapper has left him alone at the weights however, and he ought to remain competitive for this latest outing which looks a slightly easier assignment.

Assuming he can get home in the conditions here then he could go close with a repeat of that last run and every chance he can shed his maiden tag taking on a host of rivals with something to prove at present.

1.35 – Sartene’s Son
2.05 – Frisson Collonges
2.40 – Cuban Sun
3.10 – Aye Aye Charlie
3.40 – Whatsdastory
4.15 – Why Aye
4.50 – With Pleasure

(1.45 Southwell)

PRINCESS HARLEY (85/40, Unibet) has won two of her last three starts and the Dark Angel mare can continue her good spell of form to go in again.

Mick Quinn’s charge ran out a head winner over Cold Harbour last month over course and distance, keeping on dourly to land the win. That rival had earlier beaten Seven Clans who turns out here in opposition.

With a decent record on this surface with three wins and four efforts in the frame from nine total fibresand starts she is capable of defying a 4lbs rise in the handicap for that latest success, having won from higher ratings in the past and she looks worth siding with here to strike another win.

(2.55 Southwell)

BADAYEL (5/6, William Hill) has finished runner-up on all four of his career starts to date, two of which came when trained by Owen Burrows and the Havana Gold gelding is now with Ivan Furtado.

He was last seen finishing just over one length adrift of Sherpa Trail at Wolverhampton last month and clear of the third horse home. He sets a pretty stiff standard here for all he’s yet to win himself, but the step down to six furlongs could yield a first success.

This looks a decent opportunity for him to get off the mark and providing he handles this slower fibresand surface then he could prove a tough nut to crack.

Southwell runners on fibresand all-weather

Southwell are racing on the all-weather on Wednesday.

(4.00 Southwell)

AMAZING AMAYA (9/2, Bet365) has made the frame in three of her last four starts over course and distance and the New Approach mare can get back on the scoresheet here.

Derek Shaw’s charge scored here in December with a narrow defeat of Loulin, and he latterly bounced back from a lesser effort in January to find only one too good in Final Legacy, succumbing only by a neck.

Her earlier lesser run was perhaps accountable to a poor draw where she was forced to race wide, but having bounced back last time she could go one better here off the same mark; while her rider’s 5lbs claim could prove invaluable.

1.45 – Princess Harley
2.20 – Coolagh Magic
2.55 – Badayel
3.25 – Tynecastle Park
4.00 – Amazing Amaya
4.30 – Decision Maker

(5.30 Kempton)

MERRY VALE (11/4, William Hill) has shaped with promise on all three starts to date, making the frame on each occasion. John Gosden’s charge can open her account now following a short break and the Intello filly could prove tough to beat.

Runner-up and third on turf in her first two starts last term, she returned from six months off the track at Lingfield in December to finish less than two lengths’ third behind Dubious Affair. That form has taken a few knocks but she could have more to offer and the application of cheek-pieces for the first time might help her to find further improvement.

A step up in trip for this latest run could also be of benefit and returning from a couple of months off the track she can get off the mark here.

(6.30 Kempton)

BOLD SUITOR (5/2, Paddy Power) stepped up on his form in maiden and novice company when getting off the mark on his handicap debut at Newcastle last month, beating Secret Smile by just over one length in what was a tactical race.

Ed Walker’s charge appeared to win a shade cosily that day, showing a decent turn of foot and finishing well on top over his six rivals. Although that form hasn’t stood up he could still be well treated despite a 6lbs rise in the weights given he remains open to improvement.

He is one of three last-time winners in the race, but he has the scope to do better and can make his presence felt again on just his second handicap outing where he may prove ahead of the handicapper.

6.30 – Bold Suitor

7.30 – Seaport
