Cheveley Park Stakes – Our 1-2-3 Verdict For Saturday’s Fillies Group 1 At Newmarket

Ten runners go to post on Saturday for the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket, with both Meditate and Trillium prominent in the betting.

A P O’Brien has won four of the last six renewals, including winning the race in comfortable fashion last year with Tenebrism – can Meditate keep up his impressive strike-rate in the Group 1?

Or will the electric Trillium land her fourth win from just five starts?

Find out who we’re siding with in our 1-2-3 prediction for the race ↓

1st – Trillium (5/2)

TRILLIUM has been a revelation since finishing runner-up on debut and the step up in trip shouldn’t stop her landing Group 1 honours at the first attempt.

She bolted up on her last race over this trip, finishing four lengths ahead of the rest and almost six lengths clear of Swingalong (4th), who has since landed the G2 Lowther Stakes at York.

Although not winning either of her two races over the minimum trip by the same kind of distance, both were still equally as impressive, winning the G3 Molecomb Stakes and G2 Flying Childers Stakes. She pulled clear with The Platinum Queen in the latter, but her strong finish has become a regular feature of hers and she can use it again to good effect here.

2nd – Meditate (2/1)

A P O’Brien has dominated the race in recent years (won 4 of the last 6) but he may have to settle for the runner-up spot this year with MEDITATE

She tasted defeat for the first time when losing out to Tahiyra in the Moyglare Stud Stakes earlier this month, but had previously won all four of her races, including three Group races. That second placed finish was less than two weeks ago, so there is a chance this could come too soon for her. Both her and Tahiyra were well clear of the rest in that race though, and that is probably the best form on offer here.

She will appreciate the return to better ground here and the drop in trip shouldn’t be an issue, so she certainly rates as the biggest danger to Trillium. However, with that short turnaround a slight doubt and the fact she lost her unbeaten run, Meditate may have to settle for runner-up here.

3rd – Swingalong (7/1)

Trainer Karl Burke has had another stellar year with his 2YO’s, and SWINGALONG has come on leaps and bounds since being comfortably beaten by Trillium back in July. She’s a classy filly and is more than capable of filling the final place in this.

Her last two runs have been impressive for different reasons. She romped to victory when favourite at Ripon in August, beating Barefoot Angel by six lengths. That runner has since won her next two, most recently winning the G3 Firth Of Clyde Stakes last weekend. But it was Swingalong’s performance to win the G2 Lowther Stakes that was more impressive, staying on strongly to get up in the final strides at her first attempt in pattern company.

However, as impressive as those performances were, Trillium finished comfortably clear of her at Newbury before those runs, and a similar outcome is likely again here. As good as she has been lately, she will have to produce a career best to get ahead of the two at the head of the betting, so third place may be the best on offer for in this.

1st – Trillium

2nd – Meditate

3rd – Swingalong
