Dubai World Cup Carnival week one tips – Selections for every race at Meydan on Thursday

Brian Healy gives his week one Dubai World Cup Carnival tips covering all six races on a high-quality racecard at Meydan on Thursday.

The road to the richest raceday in the world kicks off on Thursday as week one of the Dubai World Cup carnival heads to post from 2.30pm GMT, with a classy racecard at Meydan headed by Group Three and Listed action on a six-race card.

Brian Healy looks through the Meydan action and picks out his best bet in every race at the premier Emirates venue which will host the showpiece meeting at the end of March.

FINAL SONG (3/1, Ladbrokes) ran poorly when last seen out behind Rose Of Kildare in the Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket, but Saeed bin Suroor’s charge can bounce back here.

The Dark Angel filly won at the first time of asking when successful at Ascot in May, and she followed up that run with a pair of creditable bronze medal finishes at Ascot and Newmarket respectively where she ran into the high-class Raffle Prize on both occasions.

Her latest run saw her beaten five lengths where she possibly did too much too soon, and she has stamina to prove over this trip given the way she faded; but she looks worth another try at the distance switching surfaces, and her earlier form gives her strong claims.

3:05 – Emirates NBD Personal Banking (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-105) 5f

This is likely to be run at a decent clip, and A MOMENTOFMADNESS (11/4, William Hill) looks weighted to go close from just 2lbs higher in the weights than her near-miss in the Portland Handicap when last seen out.

Charlie Hills’ Elnadim gelding had won the same race in 2018, and although not always at his best last term he did end the season in good form with a similar near miss at York where he was beaten just over one length into sixth behind the progressive Dakota Gold.

He perhaps doesn’t have the best of the draw here, nut he looks well-treated on that Doncaster run last time, and he can make his presence felt here.

3:40 – Emirates NBD Priority Banking (Handicap) (Dirt) (3yo+ 90-109) 1m1½f

SALTARIN DUBAI (7/2, Coral) had the reopposing New Trails behind when finishing runner-up behind Military Law in the recent Entisar Stakes, and Sateesh Seemar’s charge could be worth keeping onside to go one place better here.

The E Dubai gelding struck here twelve months ago when beating the useful Montserrat, and although not so good next time, he showed he retains all of his ability on his reappearance last month and ought to strip fitter now.

He races here from the same mark, and he could get the race run to suit him again so every chance he can remain competitive and he can get back to winning ways here.

4:15 – Meydan Challenge Sponsored By Emirates NBD Asset Management (Listed Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 95-110) 7f

This looks an excellent opportunity for the classy SUEDOIS (11/4, Ladbrokes) to get back on the scoresheet, and David O’Meara’s charge should take plenty of beating if turning out here at his best despite what looks a stiff handicap mark.

The Le Havre gelding rarely runs a bad race, but he perhaps doesn’t win as often as one of his ability should although invariably contests at a very high level it is perhaps an unfair criticism to point to his relatively sparse winning record.

Nevertheless, he did get some reward last term for a host of competitive efforts when successful at Goodwood in the Supreme Stakes, and he was far from disgraced in the subsequent Boomerang Stakes at Leoaprdstown behind Space Traveller.

Third at Keeneland when last seen in action in the Shadwell Turf Mile, he missed his intended Breeders’ Cup engagement; but having mostly contested at Group level he now has his sights trained on a Listed handicap where he features from a mark of 111 which while not a gimme in a fairly strong line-up is well within his capability to exploit assuming he can perform at top of his game.

4:50 – Dubawi Stakes Sponsored By Emirates NBD Private Banking (Group 3) (Dirt) (3yo+) 6f

Although DRAFTED (2/1, Paddy Power) hasn’t been seen in action for some nine months, the Field Commission gelding could take some beating if returning here at the peak of his powers, and Doug Watson’s charge can make a winning reappearance.

A four-time course and distance winner, including a pair of Group Three contests,he finished a close runner-up in this race twelve months ago and ended his campaign with a solid fifth of nine runners behind the high-class X Y Jet in the Golden Shaheen.

He had won first time up last term, winning over course and distance in the Garhound Sprint where he beat the reopposing Iron Malik by a nose, and given his form since then he looks the safest option to come out on top here on his return to action assuming he’s fully wound up.

5:25 – Dubai Racing Club Classic Sponsored By Emirates NBD Wholesale Banking (Listed Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-108) 1m4f

Godolphin has a strong hand in this contest, but MOUNTAIN HUNTER (7/2, Bet365) could be the one to side with on his return from three months off, and the Lonhro gelding can follow up his Newmarket win when last seen.

Saeed bin Suroor’s charge has won over course and distance in the past, and although things didn’t go his way in a light campaign last term following a pair of wins here in February he did sign off with a defeat of Loxley in the Listed Godolphin Stakes where he struck by a nose.

That form is decent and he turns out here from the same rating so ought to be capable of making his presence felt despite the possibility of needing this first run since that outing. Nevertheless, he looks to hold solid claims on the pick of his form and it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see him in the mix at the business end.
