Brian Healy looks ahead to Thursday's racecard at Meydan where he has race-by-race Dubai World Cup Carnival tips for week two at the premier Emirates track.

It is week two of the Dubai World Cup Carnival at Meydan on Thursday, and eight races go to post on a quality afternoon racecard at the premier Emirates venue, including the Group Two Singspiel Stakes and the first round of the Al Maktoum Challenge.

Brian Healy has been busy looking ahead to Thursday’s Meydan racecard where he gives his race-by-race selections for all seven of the day’s races.

14:30 – Al Maktoum Challenge R1 Presented By Longines La Grande Classique Arab (Group 1) (Dirt) (5yo+) 1m

ES AJEEB (SP) could be the answer having beaten hat-trick seeking Aatebat Al Khalediah back in November, and although he was vanquished himself behind Af Alwajel last time out, that run did come over a trip shorter than this.

Back over one mile, the Big Easy entire can turn the tables from a good draw where his early pace could see him steal enough of a march on rivals to see him get home in front.

3:05 – Longines Hydroconquest (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-110) 6f

EKHTIYAAR (11/4, William Hill) possibly needed the run when finishing fifth behind Ibn Malik in a Listed race here in December, but with that start under his belt Doug Watson’s charge can do better.

A decent sort for Roger Varian prior to joining this yard, he was a course and distance winner last February on his second outing for the Watson team, and he followed up that win with a solid runner-up effort behind Blue Point in a Group Three contest.

He disappointed in the Al Quoz, but was possibly amiss and he wasn’t seen out again until that recent reappearance, and he is sure to strip fitter now. This is slightly easier than that race he took in last time out, and every chance he can make his presence felt here where he can get back on the scoresheet.

Ekhtiyaar (right) can strike at Meydan on Thursday.

3:40 – UAE 2000 Guineas Trial Presented By Longines Dolce Vita (Conditions) (Dirt) (3yo) 1m

FIRST VIEW (11/4, William Hill) is 2-2- at Kempton, latterly running out a half-length victor over First Receiver on his last outing, and Saeed bin Suroor’s charge can make it three wins from three starts here.

The Exceed and Excel colt found plenty for pressure that day to hold off the runner-up, and while the form may not prove particularly strong, there could be significant improvement still to come from him.

This doesn’t look the strongest of fields he takes on here, and he can show some further progress to strike again assuming the switch to dirt from polytrack doesn’t catch him out.

4:15 – Singspiel Stakes Presented By Longines Master Collection (Group 2) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m1f

BENBATL (1/2, William Hill) wasn’t seen to best effect in the QEII Stakes at Ascot on Qipco Champions Day when last seen out, clearly unsuited by the heavy ground as he weakened quickly to finish last of the runners.

The Dubawi entire is forgiven that effort, and he posted an earlier impressive defeat of King Of Comedy at Newmarket to take the Group Two Shadwell Joel Stakes by five lengths; he can bounce back to winning form then following a break, and Saeed bin Suroor’s charge could prove tough to beat.

He won this race twelve months ago on his reappearance from four months off the track, beating Emotionless by three lengths, and his Meydan record reads three wins from four starts where his sole defeat came in the Jebel Hatta behind Blair House where he was denied by less than one length.

Still relatively lightly-raced despite being a six-year old now, he still has plenty to offer at this level and he should make a winning return to action.

Benbatl can win a second Singspiel Stakes at Meydan on Thursday.

4:50 – Longines Conquest Classic (Div I) (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-105) 1m

ZAKOUSKI (6/5, William Hill) makes his first start in almost nine months, and the Shamardal gelding can resume winning ways in a competitive contest.

Charlie Appleby’s charge made a winning debut at Kempton back in November 2018, beating Headman by two lengths, and that rival has since proven himself a high-class performer with a pair of Group Two wins.

His subsequent defeat in the Craven Stakes back in April didn’t show him at his best, where he got worked up prior to the start and he might have been amiss in that contest given he hasn’t been seen out again since.

He’s been gelded in the interim and makes his return to action in a handicap where he could prove well-treated, and with the potential for better still he can make a winning return.

5:25 – Al Maktoum Challenge R1 Presented By Longines Conquest V H P (Group 2) (Dirt) (3yo+) 1m

HEAVY METAL (10/1, William Hill, each-way) failed to beat a rival home behind the reopposing Secret Ambition in a Listed contest here last month, but that was his first start in nine months and the Exceed and Excel veteran can do better this time around with that outing under his belt.

Salem bin Ghadayer’s charge might not be the same force that saw him a regular winner here in 2017/18, including beating Thunder Snow in this race, and his last win came in the 2018 Godolphin Mile on Dubai World Cup Day in 2018 where he beat Muntazah.

He’s been lightly raced since with only five starts, finding only Coal Front too strong when defending his Godolphin Mile crown, and he should be sharper now following his latest reappearance so every chance he can take a forward step now.

He can be forgiven that return to action, and it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see him post a better effort this time around where he could prove tough to pass if getting his own way up front where his good draw in the number three stall can see him bag the rail, and he’s certainly capable of making the frame.

6:00 – Dubai Trophy Presented By Longines Record Collection (Conditions) (Turf) (3yo) 6f

Godolphin is well-represented in this contest and CHASING DREAMS (15/8, William Hill) can maintain his unbeaten record for Charlie Appleby and William Buick.

The Starspangledbanner filly has been impressive in winning starts at Newmarket last April from Good Vibes prior to returning from six months off at Wolverhampton in October where he recorded another ready success with a three lengths’ victory over Quick Recap.

There is likely significant improvement to come, and she has already shown she can run well fresh as evidenced in that last win. Her debut win is working out well, and while the form of her latest success perhaps is only ordinary she is surely capable of better and can land a hat-trick of wins now with the potential for significant progress still to come.

Charlie Appleby can saddle winners on Thursday’s card at Meydan.

6:35 – Longines Conquest Classic Trophy (Div II) (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-105) 1m

CHIEFOFCHIEFS (14/1, William Hill, each-way) perhaps wasn’t suited by the heavy ground at Ascot when last seen out, eventually finishing ninth in the Balmoral Handicap behind Escobar; but the Royal Applause gelding could be worth chancing here on his reappearance from almost three months off the track and faced with a better surface.

Charlie Fellowes’ charge won on the all-weather at Kempton last January, beating Family Fortunes on his return from six months off; but he has won on turf in the past, and he can make his presence felt here on his reappearance where he races from a good draw near the rail and off a mark that ought to prove workable.

This is a competitive contest to close out the card, but he is 2lbs lower here than his last winning mark and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him make the frame.
