We’re all set for a HUGE weekend of racing. Epsom plays host to the Oaks and Derby, two of the biggest races on the sporting calendar. We’ve picked out an each-way selection for both races to make up a 198/1 E/W double!

CONCERT HALL (Epsom Oaks – 4:30pm Friday) 17/2

Concert Hall ridden by Ryan Moore (right) wins the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden at Curragh Racecourse.

A P O’Brien has a superb record in the race, winning five of the last seven renewals (including the last two), and although Tuesday looks to be his number one prospect judging by the booking of Ryan Moore, we prefer the chances of CONCERT HALL.

She has a fantastic pedigree – Dubawi and 2012 Epsom Oaks winner Was, who coincidentally Concert Hall’s jockey Seamie Heffernan rode to victory that day. She seems to have improved this season too, with two solid runs so far in 2022.

She stepped up in trip to 1m 2f on her reappearance run at Navan, winning despite being short of room in the run in. The form of that race has worked out extremely well – she beat Cairde Go Deo, who ran out an eight-length winner in Listed company next time out. She also beat Tranquil Lady (who reopposes in this), who then won the Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes next time out.

She then dropped back to a mile for the Irish 1000 Guineas, where she finished third behind Homeless Songs and Tuesday. She came home like a rocket in the final furlong and only just failed to catch Tuesday, and the hope is that with the step up to 1m 4f here she can fly home again and reverse form with Tuesday. She looks far too big a price considering her pedigree and trainers form in the race.

NAHANNI (Epsom Derby – 4:30pm Saturday) 20/1

Nahanni ridden by William Buick, on their way to winning the Cazoo Blue Riband Trial during the Epsom Downs Spring Meeting at Epsom Downs Racecourse. Picture date: Tuesday April 19, 2022.

Charlie Appleby and Adam Kirby teamed up to win this last year with Adayar, and we think they have an excellent chance of following up with NAHANNI

Having been unfortunate not to win on debut when short of room when asked to push forward, he’s made no mistake since, winning all three of his next races. He had a notable win over the 1m 4f trip he’ll encounter on Saturday when streaking clear to run out an impressive nine-length winner over Chairman (who won his next two races).

He then came to Epsom to land the Blue Riband Trial, where the form is working out nicely. Despite a slow start, he beat Charlie Fellowes’ Grand Alliance who reopposes in this. He also beat A P O’Brien’s United Nations that day, who has since come out to beat another of today’s rivals in Walk Of Stars.

He’s up against plenty of big names in this, including the likes of Desert Crown and Stone Age (both have excellent chances), but a chance is taken on Nahanni, especially with the SIX places on offer with Skybet.
