Free Monday horse racing tips 3 February – Best bets for Wolverhampton and Carlisle

Brian Healy gives his Monday horse racing tips and best bets for both of the day’s meetings at Carlisle over the sticks and Wolverhampton on the all-weather.

The loss of Fontwell’s racecard on Monday following an inspection leaves just two meetings to go to post across the UK and there is afternoon jumps racing action on the agenda from Carlisle; while Wolverhampton are also racing on their tapeta surface under the floodlights in the evening.

Brian Healy has looked at both racecards and gives his Monday horse racing tips and best bets for each meeting taking place.

2.20 Carlisle – BALLYBREEN (3/1, William Hill)
2.55 Carlisle – PENNY MALLOW (11/8, Bet365)
4.00 Carlisle – TALKOFGOLD (10/3, Bet365)
5.30 Wolverhampton – ROCKESBURY (7/4, Bet365)
6.30 Wolverhampton – COMEATCHOO (9/4, Paddy Power)
7.00 Wolverhampton – OH THIS IS US (7/2, Bet365)

(2.20 Carlisle)

BALLYBREEN (3/1, William Hill) has been perked up by the application of blinkers with successive wins in heavy ground at Hereford and Exeter in January; the Gold Well gelding could now find another jolt of improvement to make it a hat-trick of wins in the head-gear.

Evan Williams’ charge latterly ran out a convincing four lengths’ winner over Mount Oliver last month, making all the running and coming home unchallenged despite showing a tendency to jump to his right.

He’s been raised 8lbs for that success which sees him step into Class 4 company so he’ll need to find some progress to follow up given he’s disappointed before against this level of opposition. But assuming the blinkers continue to have a positive effect then he could well deliver again here if continuing his good run of form.

(2.55 Carlisle)

PENNY MALLOW (11/8, Bet365) has looked a useful recruit to hurdling in notching up a pair of wins at Plumpton and Wetherby respectively, latterly posting a six lengths’ defeat of Prince Llywelyn where she scored readily having made all the running.

Venetia Williams’ charge showed in both those wins that she handles soft ground with aplomb and she could be a tough nut to crack in this contest where she bids for a hat-trick of wins.

This will be a tougher assignment having to give away weight all round to this field including fellow 118-rated rival Lily’s gem who receives 12lbs from the Kapgarde mare; but she is still unexposed and could easily have more to offer so is chanced to progress again and land the three-timer.

(4.00 Carlisle)

TALKOFGOLD (10/3, Bet365) has returned from a break in decent fettle, building on a much-needed return to action where he might have been stretched by the longer trip to get back on the scoresheet at Hexham over this trip in December with a defeat of Ripstick.

Martin Todhunter’s charge subsequently wasn’t disgraced when chasing home Iwilldoit at Kelso over the Christmas period, again perhaps just finding his stamina being taxed by the trip and stiff finish. But he was just over three lengths adrift on that occasion and his jumping wasn’t always perfect at the Borders venue.

Back in trip here, he has more on his plate having been hit with a 3lbs rise in the weights; but he features from a basement mark and has won his only previous start at this trip so the Gold Well gelding could be worth chancing to get back to winning ways here.

1.50 – Goobinator
2.20 – Ballybreen
2.55 – Penny Mallow
3.25 – Dorking Cock
4.00 – Talkofgold
4.30 – XPO Universel

(5.30 Wolverhampton)

Winning doesn’t come easily to this field so ROCKESBURY (7/4, Bet365) is taken to come out on top following a solid performance last week over one mile here where the Foxwedge gelding found only one too good.

David Loughnane’s charge had also finished in the silver medal berth over the same course and distance last month and possibly failed to handle fibresand inbetween that effort and his latest where he was beaten just over one length behind Ruby Gates.

His last success came over this course and distance back in November 2018 from 1lb higher than today’s rating and a repeat of his latest outing might be enough to see him get back on the scoresheet.

(6.30 Wolverhampton)

COMEATCHOO (9/4, Paddy Power) is far from being consistent but he did manage to follow up a better run at Lingfield in January with a breakthrough win at Kempton eight days later. Phil McEntee’s charge now has to back up that last outing, but if he can run to a similar level then he could prove a tough nut to crack in a poor race.

The Camacho gelding was running from 1lb out of the weights when delivering a career-best effort to deny A Go Go by one length, running on well to beat a field which included a subsequent winner.

That was a stronger race than this and he’s only been raised 3lbs for the success so every chance he can strike again dropping back into a Class 6 contest over the same trip.

(7.00 Wolverhampton)

OH THIS IS US (7/2, Bet365) might have been amiss when last seen at Kempton in Listed company last November where he folded tamely to finish ninth behind Set Piece; but now returning from a break Richard 21Hannon’s charge might be able to bounce back here with a better effort.

The Acclamation gelding is a smart performer at his best and he won three times last term which included twice on the all-weather at Lingfield. He also won a valuable ehandicap at Chester in August prior to finishing four lengths’ third behind the high-class Mustashry at Newmarket in the Group Two Challenge Stakes.

In all he ran 15 times last term and he may have gone once too often to the well on his final start. He’s been given a break since and he could show up here in better form win a race where he can make his presence felt given that he is favoured by these weights.

5.00 – Bold Decision
5.30 – Rockesbury
6.00 – Buy Me Back
6.30 – Comeatchoo
7.00 – Oh This Is Us
7.30 – Windsor Cross
8.00 – Sheriffmuir
8.30 – Cliara
