CITY DERBY looked set to go very close when being badly hampered and unseating Paddy Brennan in a Hereford bumper back in October, but the Ask gelding can gain some compensation here.
Well backed that day he travelled powerfully in rear before being asked for effort turning in and he made rapid headway before being hampered by the fall of Cup Of Coffee and parting company with his jockey entering the straight.
Assuming that mishap hasn’t left a mark he can build on the experience gained on that occasion to get off the mark at the second attempt and he should go close if handling this surface.

SCHALKE ran a promising first race on debut at Kelso and built on that performance when last seen at Doncaster in November; Rebecca Menzies’ charge can get off the mark at the third attempt with further improvement anticipated.
The Malinas gelding finished around eight lengths’ fourth behind Fete Champetre in a bumper at the Scottish track, but he latterly found only one too good next time when denied by two lengths and the winner of that contest has since placed in a Listed race so the form looks useful.
He might ideally be suited by further when switching to timber, but with the prospect of more to come he gets the vote here to gain a first success.

MOON KING was a very useful stayer on the flat for Ralph Beckett, reeling off a five-timer in 2019 and also winning at Haydock over this trip last June before contesting some valuable handicaps which included at Royal Ascot.
Now with Charlie Longsdon the Sea The Moon gelding has shaped with promise on all three starts over hurdles, latterly running out a wide margin winner of a Musselburgh maiden contest where despite making some mistakes he won with authority.
He could relish the return to the level with no obstacles to jump and he finished runner-up on his last start on polytrack so it wouldn’t be a shock to see him turn in a big performance under Brian Hughes.

QUICK GRABIM won an Irish bumper when trained by Robbie McNamara and the Oscar gelding subsequently proved himself a top hurdler for Willie Mullins which included a Grade One win at Fairyhouse prior to moving to Fergal O’Brien.
He’s since been lightly-raced and highly tried for his current yard with his last couple of runs coming over the larger obstacles where he chased home Fusil Raffles on his first start over fences at Uttoxeter in September although he was a shade disappointing at Warwick when last seen.
The form of his reappearance however is strong and if handling polytrack back in a bumper then it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him going close here.
5:45 Southwell – Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap Cl6 (4yo+ 0-60) 2m½f
ARTISTIC STREAK isn’t the most reliable, but she handles this surface well and was a course and distance winner back in October; Tom Dascombe’s charge ought to go close if producing her best.
The New Approach mare struck by a head from Thawry and bounced back from a lesser effort to finish less than one length third behind Fleur Irlandaise at Wolverhampton when last seen.
She was only run down late on that occasion at big odds and the form has been franked with both the winner and runner-up landing subsequent wins. Only 1lb higher for that last outing and with a good 7lbs claimer up she ought to continue to make her presence felt and she can get back to winning ways here.
6:15 Southwell – Betway Casino Novice Stakes Cl5 (3yo+) 6f
KEVIN THE MINION is improving with each start, bettering his finishing position each time and the Brazen Beau gelding can get off the mark at the fourth attempt.
Karl Burke’s charge most recently found only one too good over this course and distance last month when chasing home Fighter Pilot; while no match for the winner he was clear of the third and proven ability to handle this deep surface gives him an edge on his rivals.
Assuming he can build on that outing he looks the one to beat in this contest and he can go one better to open his account.
