Friday all-weather racing tips – Best bets at Newcastle & Southwell
Friday 15 January all-weather racing tips
The weather continues to wreak havoc with the scheduled horse racing fixtures but all-weather racing continues and we’ve picked out our Friday all-weather racing tips and best bets at Newcastle and Southwell.
Sadly for jumps racing fans the continued inclement weather has claimed both of Friday’s scheduled National Hunt fixtures at Sedgefield and Huntingdon leaving only two all-weather fixtures to keep the racing show on the road.
The day’s meetings come in the afternoon at Newcastle on their tapeta surface; while Southwell are racing in the evening on their fibresand surface under the floodlights. We’ve looked over both of the day’s cards and have picked out out Friday all-weather racing tips and best bets.
FRIDAY ALL-WEATHER RACING TIPS – BEST BETS AT NEWCASTLE & SOUTHWELL
1:40 Newcastle – Play 4 To Score At Betway Handicap (Div II) Cl6 (4yo+ 0-60) 1m2f
PALLAS DANCER seemed to find improvement faced with a stiffer test and being fitted with cheekpieces to run out a neck winner over Star Of Wells when last seen on Boxing Day scoring at Wolverhampton and Brian Ellison’s charge can follow up here.
The War Command gelding was always prominent and he found plenty for pressure to prevail close home despite being all out to do so. He’s only been raised 3lbs for that victory and if the headgear has the same positive effect then he could double up in another relatively weak affair.
Both the runner-up and fourth from that last-time success have gone on to register subsequent wins and as a lightly-raced sort he could yet have more to offer so is taken to strike again in this contest.
2:40 Newcastle – Bombardier British Hopped Amber Beer Handicap Cl4 (4yo+ 0-85) 1m
IMPERIAL COMMAND was a turf winner back in July for Jonjo O’Neill and the War Command gelding made no mistake on his first start for new trainer Mark Loughnane when scoring over seven furlongs here last month.
He was returning from almost four months off when beating The Great Heir by a neck in that reappearance, appearing to do the job a shade cosily and a 4lbs rise in the weights might not be enough to prevent a repeat.
Sure to be sharper with that outing under his belt the form has held up quite well with the runner-up filling the same position next time out while the fifth has since won and the return to one mile will hold no fears so he looks to have solid claims of adding another win to his tally.
3:10 Newcastle – Play Ladbrokes 5-A-Side On Football Handicap Cl3 (3yo 0-95) 7f
Hat-trick seeing Oo De Lally could prove tough to beat if fully wound up returning from 100 days off, but it might be worth siding with fellow last-time winner FAYATHAAN who ran out a ready winner at Lingfield 11 days ago and the Mehmas colt can follow up here.
Mark Loughnane’s charge had been in fair form prior to that success, also registering a win over six furlongs here on his final outing for Richard Fahey back in October and he was bouncing back from a lesser effort at Wolverhampton when scoring by three-parts of a length from Mutahamisa latest.
He has a 6lbs penalty to carry for that win, but Laura Pearson’s claim offsets the bulk of that additional burden so he is effectively only 1lb higher and he ought to make his presence felt again with course-winning form a plus.
3:40 Newcastle – Ladbrokes Watch Racing Online For Free Novice Stakes Cl5 (3yo) 5f
Bryan Smart has the top two in the field and it might be worth sticking with EQUATE to follow up his win at Beverley earlier in the campaign.
The Equiano colt stepped up markedly on his debut seventh when getting the better of Pivoting by a head in that breakthrough success and both the winner and third have won since to give the form a boost.
He’s been absent since so has to prove his fitness on his return from four months off, while he’s penalised for his win and makes his tapeta debut so there’s a fair bit he has to prove if he’s to double his tally. However the manner of his win last time suggested there was certainly more in the locker and further improvement can’t be ruled out.
This looks a fairly stiff task against his stablemate Sir Titus to whom he has to give 5lbs and is the choice of Graham Lee; but that one looked better over six furlongs last time and might not prove as effective back at the minimum trip.
5:30 Southwell – Bombardier British-Hopped Amber Beer Median Auction Maiden Stakes Cl5 (3-5yo) 7f
OPEN MYSTERY sets the standard amongst those who have had the benefit of a run and it might be worth siding with Karl Burke’s charge to put his experience to good use against some interesting debutantes.
The Garswood gelding has made the frame both times in his starts, latterly finding only one too good over this trip at Wolverhampton although the winner did look a decent prospect and ran out a comfortable victor.
Despite the defeat the selection was three lengths’ clear of the third and rest and he still looked a bit raw so could progress again to get off the mark at the third attempt where the benefit of experience could prove crucial in this contest although an above-average debutante could make life tough for him.
Nevertheless he has the potential for better to come judging on what he’s shown thus far and he could be worth siding with to open his win account if handling this slower surface.
7:00 Southwell – Play 4 To Score At Betway Handicap Cl6 (4yo+ 0-60) 5f
GOSSIP is 2-2 over this course and distance since joining Scott Dixon and the Exceed and Excel filly wasn’t disgraced in finishing fourth over six furlongs here in between those wins, the latest of which came earlier this month when beating reopposing Red Stripes by a head.
That victory came in an apprentices’ contest and she did well to overcome a awkward start where she got up in the last strides for the victory in a close finish where the third was only a further half-length behind.
He escapes a penalty for that success and due to go up 3lbs in future he is well-in at the weights here with his good 5lbs claimer helping to further ease his burden so he could prove the one to beat in this contest.
