FRIDAY HORSE RACING BEST BETS – TIPS FOR THE DAY’S UK RACING FIXTURES
2:10 Bangor – Family Fun Evening 16th August Handicap Chase Cl3 (4yo+ 0-140) 3m
ROCK ON ROCCO is a dual-winner over fences, scoring wins at Ludlow and Worcester and the Shirocco gelding can get back on the scoresheet here if lasting out this longer trip.
Tom George’s charge has placed in points over this trip but he’s been kept to shorter distances thus far under Rules in both hurdles and chases where he’s won in both disciplines. His last success came when successful at Worcester in May where he beat Wagner by two lengths comfortably and that runner-up has won since.
There was no shame in finishing third at Perth latest behind Pookie Pekan where he perhaps wasn’t suited by the track and he remains capable of better with the longer trip a possible source of improvement so might be worth chancing to resume winning ways here.
2:35 Wolverhampton – Read Hollie Doyle’s Column On attheraces.com Handicap Cl4 (4yo+ 0-85) 1m6f
MIDRARR stepped up on previous efforts when faced with this course and distance latest, running out a comfortable winner over Cogital and William Haggas’ charge can build on that improved effort to follow up here.
The Dubawi filly had won at Chester last August but her form since that success had been patchy prior to posting that return to winning ways where she scored readily from the front end and there should be plenty of pace on again in this contest which will suit her.
She’s been pushed up 5lbs in the weights for that success although her rider’s claim offsets the increase so she can effectively compete from the same mark as last time and she can repeat the dose here with a follow-up victory.
3:00 Goodwood – Unibet Golden Mile Handicap Cl2 (3yo+) 1m
ACQUITTED was possibly just given too much to do when finishing a close third at Sandown recently behind reopposing pair Magical Morning and Maydanny, but the Night Of Thunder gelding can overturn that form here and resume winning ways.
A dual-winner in 2019 he has failed to add to his tally since, but recent efforts have suggested he could be back in the winners’ enclosure before too much longer and he enjoys a pull at the weights with Magical Morning which can see him close the gap here.
He should get a strong pace to aim at in this contest which will help him and every chance he can make his presence felt again here.
3:45 Wolverhampton – Honest Brian Gear’s 60th Birthday Handicap (Div II) Cl6 (3yo+ 0-55) 7f
None of this field are particularly reliable so it might be worth sticking with MABO who at least arrives in some sort of form having finished up runner-up the last twice and Grace Harris’ charge may be able to go one better.
The Aussie Rules gelding scored his last victory at Kempton last June, but he’s been hit or miss since although recent effort here and at Bath have hinted that he might be about to strike having hit the crossbar in those runs where he’s only been beaten around one length each time.
He does have to carry top-weight here but given the majority of his rivals are out of form he looks the one to be with given he’s been in better form of late and he could take advantage.
4:45 Goodwood – Unibet Deposit £10 Get £40 Bonus Nursery Handicap Cl2 (2yo) 6f
EVER GIVEN is 2-3 this term and still looked raw when landing the second of those wins at Chester latest when beating Mahagoni by a neck.
Tom Dascombe’s charge had ran better than the bare result when only fifth at Pontefract the time before although that has developed into very strong form with the winner and third both winning Group Two races since.
Dropping back to six furlongs will be no issue for the Kod Bear colt who could have further improvement to come and while he’s up 5lbs he can make his presence felt again here with another victory.
5:25 Bath – Read Hollie Doyle’s Column On attheraces.com Handicap (Bath Summer Sprint Series Qualifier) Cl6 (3yo 0-65) 5½f
PORTELET BAY knows how to win and arrives here on the back of a success at Yarmouth earlier in the month; David Evans’ charge can follow up here and the Mayson gelding ought to go close with a repeat.
Also a winner at Redcar in April he has made the frame in subsequent runs at Thirsk and Brighton prior to bouncing back from a lesser run with that return to winning ways latest where he sported a first-time visor.
He appeared to win a shade more comfortably than the official winning margin might suggest and a 4lbs rise for that success is tolerable so every chance he can go in again here.
6:48 Musselburgh – Every Race Live On Racing TV Nursery Handicap Cl6 (2yo 0-60) 7f
CLODOVEA is progressive and the Mondialiste filly can take another forward step here having won last time out.
Tim Easterby’s charge has shown improved form switching to handicaps, finding one too good at Pontefract earlier this month before appearing to relish this longer trip at Beverley seven days later when beating On The River by a neck.
She was giving the runner-up 3lbs on that occasion and despite the narrow margin of victory won well in the end given she had met trouble in running and had the worst of the draw.
These revised terms make life a little tougher for her but there could be more to come and if she handles this quicker ground there’d be no surprise in seeing her doubling up on her win tally.
6:55 Newmarket – Rich Energy Powering You Fillies’ Handicap Cl5 (3yo+ 0-75) 1m4f
FLOWER OF SCOTLAND might be worth chancing to follow up her breakthrough victory at Haydock at the beginning of the month and James Fanshawe’s charge can go close here.
The Gleneagles filly had turned in some useful efforts without winning prior to that victory where she showed a good attitude to get up on the line and land the win by just a nose from Steel An Icon and there could be more to come from her with only a 2lbs rise to contend with.
This is likely a shade tougher but she’s lightly races and could have improvement to come while the booking of Tom Marquand is a plus and a big run wouldn’t be a surprise.
