Friday horse racing tips – Best bets at Ascot, Uttoxeter, Southwell and Wolverhampton
Friday’s fixture list of horse racing action sees four meetings heading to post across the UK as we head into the weekend and we’ve picked out our Friday horse racing tips and best bets at each meeting.
We head into the weekend on Friday with a fixture list of four UK horse racing over the sticks and on the all-weather, and the feature meeting of the day comes from Ascot where there is a pair of Grade Two contests on the card.
The ITV Racing cameras will be in attendance at the Berkshire venue to cover the best of the Friday action; but Friday isn’t only about Ascot and there’s further jumps racing at Uttoxeter, while Southwell race on their all-weather fibresand surface in the afternoon.
Completing the day’s fixture list is an evening all-weather meeting under the floodlights at Wolverhampton on their tapeta surface and we’ve looked through all four of the day’s card to pick out our Friday horse racing tips and best bets at each meeting as we try to find a few winners.
FRIDAY HORSE RACING TIPS – BEST BETS AT ASCOT, UTTOXETER, SOUTHWELL & WOLVERHAMPTON
12:37 Uttoxeter – Vote For Hollie Doyle On SPOTY Handicap Hurdle Cl5 (3yo+ 0-100) 2m4f
DONALD DUX rounded off last term with a win at Market Rasen but the Sholokhov gelding has taken his form up a notch following a wind operation and Andrew Crook’s charge can win again having bolted up when last seen out eight days ago.
He had finished runner-up on his first start and seasonal debut at Doncaster, beaten two lengths by Jessica Rabbit where he might just have found a lack of sharpness against him in the closing stages. However he stepped up markedly for that return when running out a wide margin winner latest over Border Victor at Newcastle and he escapes a penalty for that win given it came in a conditional riders’ event.
His young jockey can also utilise his full 7lbs allowance for this latest outing and he could prove tough to beat as a result on these terms assuming this outing doesn’t come too soon.
12:45 Ascot – ITV7 £100K Jackpot On Boxing Day Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Cl3 (4yo+ 0-130) 2m5½f
ZYON hasn’t had much racing and the Martaline gelding can go well here if none the worse for his latest win at Wincanton last month in novice company.
Paul Nicholls’ charge has had just four starts in more than two years since finishing down the field on his racecourse debut in a Wincanton bumper back in April 2018, but he’s shown some ability in those rare outings and he won a shade comfortably on his latest reappearance in November.
He struck by four lengths over Beyond The Pale, scoring comfortably and that form looks fair. Now trying a handicap where he might have been handed a workable opening mark he has he services of Lorcan Williams whose 3lbs allowance adds further strength to his claims and still unexposed with the scope to do better he can double up here.
1:10 Uttoxeter – “Off The Fence” On youtube.com/attheraces Maiden Hurdle (GBB Race) Cl4 (4yo+) 2m4f
TUPELO MISSISSIPPI won twice in bumpers last term, scoring both at Newcastle with one each on tapeta and turf; Brian Ellison’s charge made a solid switch to hurdling in November on his seasonal return to action at Carlisle, beaten just one length by Le Cheval Noir.
The Yeats gelding shaped well again when last seen back at Newcastle where he finished three lengths’ third behind Getaround although the quicker ground and longer trip might not have entirely been to his liking.
That form though looks fair with the winner since running well in a decent contest at Carlisle five days ago while the runner-up finished in the frame in a Grade Two next time. Now back down in trip and returning to a more testing surface he may be able to find improvement where he can get off the mark over obstacles at the third attempt.
1:30 Southwell – Betway Handicap Cl3 (3yo+ 0-90) 5f
BIRKENHEAD was beaten only a half-length behind reopposing Duke Of Firenze over this course and distance seven days ago but Les Eyre’s charge can gain revenge here on revised terms.
The Captain Gerrard gelding was conceding a total of 10lbs to that rival last time taking into account the rider’s claim on the winner; but better off at the weights now with his last-time conquerer carrying a penalty it may be enough to turn the tables.
He had won here in October when returning from a break and he finished ahead of another of today’s rivals in Dark Shot in that latest outing just seven days ago and should confirm that form on same terms. Likely to continue to be competitive he can get back to winning ways.
1:55 Ascot – Sky Bet Extra Places Every Day Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl3 (4yo+ 0-135) 2m1f
MACK THE MAN proved progressive over hurdles last term, winning twice which included in a Listed contest at Sandown and Evan Williams’ charge held every chance when brought down at the final obstacle in the Betfair Hurdle won by the smart Pic D’orhy.
The Flemensfirth gelding shaped well enough on his chase debut at Ffos Las last month where he possibly needed the run and he was a shade fortunate to bag the silver medal having looked set for third at best until one of his rivals fell.
He was no match for the easy winner who has since finished runner-up in a Grade One behind Allmankind at Sandown and he’ll be sharper for that outing. With the potential for improvement from what could prove a lenient mark ahead of his handicap debut he could go close for his inform yard and no surprise to see him strike over fences at the second attempt.
2:05 Southwell – Play 4 To Score At Betway Handicap Cl5 (3yo+ 0-75) 2m2½f
SHINE BABY SHINE could be the one to beat under a penalty as she steps up markedly in trip and the Aqlaam filly can follow up her latest success.
Phil Kirby’s charge returned to form last time when beating Lady Camelot by a half-length over 1m6f at this track ten days ago, scoring readily and a subsequent 5lbs penalty might not stop her from going in again where there step up in trip could suit.
She’s won and placed over two miles at this venue and also Newcastle and she handles fibresand well where she has three wins and three places from nine starts on the surface. The penalty she carries for her last win still leaves her well treated on historic form and every chance she can go close again.
4:45 Wolverhampton – Play 4 To Win At Betway Handicap (Div II) Cl6 (3yo+ 0-55) 5f
It might be worth giving another chance to TROUSER THE CASH who blew her chances at the start when last seen competing over course and distance. However given she finished only one length adrift of the winner in finishing third she could quickly get back on track if getting away on terms this time around.
Amy Murphy’s charge had won over this trip at Chelmsford the time before, beating Indian Pursuit by a neck and that form has been boosted with the runner-up going on to win two of his next three starts.
This mark remains workable and assuming the Starspangledbanner filly gets out of the stalls without mishap or giving up ground then she could go close and no surprise to see her make her presence felt.
6:15 Wolverhampton – Get Your Ladbrokes Daily Odds Boost Nursery Handicap Cl5 (2yo 0-70) 7f
Twice-raced UPROAR could be worth chancing to get off the mark now switching to a handicap and James Fanshawe’s charge showed up well latest when finishing third at Newcastle.
That run came almost three months ago where the Sepoy filly finished around six lengths behind Third Kingdom who won well and looked a useful prospect. She had a subsequent winner behind her and there could be better to come now trying handicaps where a mark of 66 may not prove harsh.
Still unexposed she does have to overcome her absence, but it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see further progress and she can open her win account at the third attempt.
