Garrowby Stakes – Our 1-2-3 Prediction For Sunday’s Listed Feature At York

The only Listed action in the UK on Sunday comes from York, who host the Garrowby Stakes (2:55pm). We’ve studied the card and given our 1-2-3 prediction for the feature.

It’s a good opportunity to take advantage of William Hills’s fantastic new customer offer:

1st – Gale Force Maya (4/1)

Connor Beasley is the joint-leading jockey in this race, having won on board Nameitwhatyoulike (2017) and Dakota Gold (2019), and he has an excellent chance of another winner with GALE FORCE MAYA.

Michael Dods’ mare has some solid form to her name this year, including two wins over C&D and a third-placed finish in the Summer Stakes over C&D. She seems to bring her A game out when racing at York and a return to this course can see her to best effect.

Most recently she finished behind Princess Shabnam in the Flying Fillies’ Stakes at Chester, but she raced wide and was giving that rival 4lb that day, so has excuses for not winning. She’s receiving weight from Ebro River and Prisoner’s Dilemma, and that should give her enough of an edge to maintain her solid record at York and gain a valuable Listed win.

2nd – Ebro River (4/1)

Phoenix Stakes winner EBRO RIVER hasn’t quite hit the levels this year that he managed in 2021, but there were signs of a revival when winning the Listed Queensferry Stakes at Chester in July.

He stayed on strongly to win to gain a long overdue win, having failed to win since that Phoenix Stakes effort. Ventura Diamond finished just under two lengths behind him that day, and although she’s 6lb better off with him here, she doesn’t have the best record on good ground and we’d rather side Hugo Palmer’s runner.

If he can return to the same level as when winning the Phoenix Stakes he would be the one to beat, and he should be in the top three here, but he could be worth taking on in the win only market.

3rd – Prisoner’s Dilemma (9/2)

Trainer Johnny Levins doesn’t send many horses over to the UK, but when he does they’re usually in with a shout! He’s sent 46 horses to the UK, with 10 of them winning (21% strike-rate), which isn’t a bad effort at all.

He sends PRISONER’S DILEMMA over for this, after a career best effort winning  at the Curragh last time out. The top-weight made light work of the race, travelling through the race like a dream and eventually running out a two and a half length winner.

He’s only attempted Listed company once (also came fourth in a Group 2 the time after), where he found Tereza Mendoza too good on that occasion, and it’s likely he’ll find one or two of these too good here.

1st – Gale Force Maya

2nd – Ebro River

3rd – Prisoner’s Dilemma
