Irish Horse Racing Tips – Best Bets on the Curragh’s Irish Oaks Card
Irish Horse Racing Tips – Saturday, July 16
The action in Ireland on Saturday comes from the Curragh, which hosts an eight-race card that centres around the Irish Oaks. Our Irish horse racing expert has identified his top bets on the day which you can check out below.
Last Crusader (3.10 Curragh) 11/1
The Group 2 Barberstown Castle Sapphire Stakes takes place at the Curragh on Saturday and one particularly interesting runner is LAST CRUSADER for trainer Karl Burke.
This Clipper Logistics-owned colt stepped forward significantly on all previous form shown when blitzing his rivals in a York Listed race in May, making all to run out a two and a quarter length winner. That form has been franked since with the runner-up landing a Listed event.
Last Crusader failed to build on that when down the field in the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock next time out, but he went off far too hard on the front end that day and failed to see it out, sensibly not given a hard time once his chance had gone.
It’s hoped that Last Crusader sets a more realistic pace here, and the addition of blinkers looks interesting given his tendency to front run. Danny Tudhope has travelled over to the Curragh for the sole ride here aboard Last Crusader, who represents an age group that has landed three of the last four renewals of this event, and a trainer that took this with Havana Grey in 2018.

Vischio (4.20 Curragh) 11/2
The Kildare Village Ladies Derby Handicap looks like a good opportunity for VISCHIO to return to winning ways.
This mare has come good since returning to the flat after a spell hurdling, winning a pair of extended 1m5f Gowran handicaps, most recently on penultimate start when far more dominant than the winning margin of a length and a quarter suggests, having kicked well clear 2f out and just appearing to get a little lonely late on.
Although Vischio couldn’t supplement that in the Cork Derby last time out, she ran better than the finishing position of fourth suggests, being the only runner to really give the impressive winner a race, losing two places late on.
It’s safe to assume that Vischio remains at the top of her game, and it looks notable that connections have snapped up Jody Townend for the ride, a jockey that took this contest in 2020 aboard the mare Princess Zoe.

Brazilian Song (4.50 Curragh) 11/1
The DMG Media Nursery Handicap has attracted a competitive field, but at the prices, it looks worth siding with BRAZILIAN SONG.
This Holy Roman Emperor colt has shown clear signs of ability in his four starts on the track to date, catching the eye when a 50/1 fourth in a Down Royal maiden last month showing clear speed and challenging from what looked a disadvantageous part of the track.
Sent off 9/1 for a Bellewstown maiden just over a fortnight ago, Brazilian Song travelled powerfully through that race and was only run down late on.
Both the Down Royal (7f) and Bellewstown (1m) runs suggest that Brazilian Song is going to benefit from dropping back to a sprint trip, and it’s notable that connections replace a 7lb claimer with top pilot Seamie Heffernan for his nursery debut.
Earlier this season Brazilian Song ran well in defeat in a Dundalk maiden behind the likes of Blackbeard and Alexis Zorba, and that form suggests an opening mark of 75 is well within his reach.
Trainer Jimmy Coogan sent out his first winner since February just last week, and Brazilian Song can keep the yard’s good form going with victory on Saturday.
