Irish Horse Racing Tips – Thursday, August 4

The main action in Ireland on Thursday comes from Leopardstown, which hosts an eight-race Flat card. As well as this, Sligo provides us with a competitive seven-race Jumps card. Our Irish horse racing expert has identified his top bets on the day which you can check out below.

Tauran Shaman (5.45 Leopardstown) 10/3

Preference goes to course specialist TAURAN SHAMAN in the Hurling For Cancer August 16th Handicap at Leopardstown on Thursday.

Jessica Harrington’s charge racked up three cracking efforts in consecutive handicaps here last season, beaten just a half-length into second on the most recent start off the same mark that he finds himself on today.

Tauran Shaman’s form dipped at the end of the campaign, and he was only seventh at Cork on return back in August, but that was a run worth upgrading as Tauran Shaman endured a troubled run from the back of the field, and given that his stable was enduring a slightly cold spell at the time.

He returns from a break here with his yard back firmly amongst the winners, whilst racing at Leopardstown is obviously a big positive given his record here. There’s a suspicion that we’re still yet to see the very best of Tauran Shaman, and if a few do go forward here it should set up for his strong finishing kick.

Irish Horse Racing Tips. Jessica Harrington, Shane Foley and owner Zhang Yuesheng can team up to score at Leopardstown on Thursday.

Beamish (6.15 Leopardstown) 10/3

The Group 3 Grant Thornton Ballyroan Stakes is the feature race at Leopardstown on Thursday, and BEAMISH rates the one to beat for Paddy Twomey and jockey Billy Lee.

This 4yo has been limited to just the three starts in his career to date, winning each outing, taking the step up into pattern company in his stride when landing the Listed Lenebane Stakes at Roscommon last time.

That was a particularly impressive success given Beamish conceded weight to Ger Lyons’ in-form mare Yaxeni, who also had appeared to have slipped the field turning for home only to be run down late by Beamish, who challenged wide.

Beamish is back on better ground here, and having won on good to firm on debut it shouldn’t trouble him, whilst he also comes into this looking by far the least exposed runner in the lineup.

Cleveland is the obvious danger to the selection on his debut for Joseph O’Brien.

Alvaro (7.35 Sligo) 5/1

The best bet on Sligo’s Thursday card comes in the Lighthouse At Clifford Electrical Handicap Hurdle, where ALVARO rates a decent bet to return to winning ways.

Eric McNamara’s charge caused a major shock when running out a 66/1 winner of a maiden hurdle at Thurles in April, but he has shown that to be no fluke with respectable efforts in two of his subsequent three starts, having genuine excuses (heavy ground) when failing to complete at Listowel in June.

Alvaro comes into this on the back of an excellent Killarney third, where he may well have finished closer but for being hampered by a faller two-out.

On that showing, stepping back up to this intermediate distance will benefit Alvaro, and a mark of 109 looks well within his compass.

This is the sole runner on the card for Eric McNamara, who sends Alvaro on a 500-mile round trip here, and he’s unlikely to be making that journey with anything but victory in mind.
