Irish Horse Racing Tips – Saturday, January 22

Saturday’s Irish horse racing action comes from Navan, which plays host to a competitive meeting that features the Grade B Navan Handicap Hurdle. Our Irish horse racing expert has identified his top bets on the cards which you can check out below.

Ardla (12:00, Dunmoe Rated Novice Hurdle)

The opening race on Navan’s Saturday card can go to ARDLA, who split a pair of 140-rated hurdlers when runner-up in a 1m6f maiden here in October.

He stepped forward on that showing when once again occupying second place on his return to hurdles at Punchestown in November, and that form has worked out very well since with the winner Grand Jury finishing second in the Grade 1 Lawlor’s Of Naas next time out.

Ardla deservedly got his head in front over course and distance last month, making all and ultimately running out a comfortable four and a half length winner. With that winning experience under his belt he should prove tough to prevent from following up.

Carrigeen Lotus (1:40, Navan Handicap Hurdle)

It is difficult to get away from the claims of CARRIGEEN LOTUS for this valuable Grade B handicap hurdle.

This one time Graded-placed bumper performer made a winning hurdles debut at Galway back in October 2020, and although she struggled for form afterwards, she was set some tough assignments at pattern level behind the likes of Concertista and Skyace.

Carrigeen Lotus put up a much-improved showing when runner-up in a handicap hurdle at Cork a fortnight ago, travelling powerfully through her race on the front end and only giving best late on.

Although raced predominantly on soft/heavy ground Carrigeen Lotus finished third in a Grade 2 at Leopardstown earlier in her career on ground similar to that of which she is expected to face here.

Routine Excellence (3:25, Gormanlough Handicap Chase)

Gavin Cromwell’s ROUTINE EXCELLENCE had some classy rivals behind when landing a point-to-point at Tinahely back in October 2020. He failed to find his feet in five starts last season yet looked revitalised after a summer break, running out an impressive winner on last month’s seasonal/hurdles debut.

That came in maiden company, and he was supported in the betting as though the performance came to no surprise for connections.

The runner-up in that Naas maiden, Salmanino, has since scored in a competitive Punchestown handicap hurdle off a mark of 99, and that suggests that Routine Excellence could be chucked in here returned to fences on handicap debut off a rating of 88.

With Sean Flanagan booked to do the steering, Routine Excellence rates the strongest bet on the Navan card.
