Irish Horse Racing Tips – Sunday, January 23

Sunday’s Irish horse racing action comes from Thurles, which plays host to a competitive meeting that features the Grade 2 Horse & Jockey Hotel Chase. Our Irish horse racing expert has identified his top bets on the cards which you can check out below.

Darrens Hope – 2:40, Coolmore N.H. Sires Mogul Irish EBF Mares Novice Chase

This Grade 2 novice chase has proven a favourites paradise down the years, with five of the last six market leaders going in, but this year’s renewal looks more open that usual and at the prices DARRENS HOPE looks the best play.

Robert Murphy’s charge struggled for form in his first three starts this season but he put up a much improved showing when chasing home the classy Concertista in a Limerick Grade 2 last time out.

There appears no runner of Concertista’s ability in this line-up, and these better conditions shouldn’t inconvenience a horse who won a point-to-point and bumper on ground with good in the going description. With main market rivals Jeremys Flame (poor strike-rate) and Minella Melody (seasonal/chase debut) arriving with questions to answer, Darrens Hope is backed to provide his small yard with a notable big-race winner.

Notebook – 3:15, Horse & Jockey Hotel Chase

Fakir D’oudairies is a classy runner at his best, albeit he has now twice finished well held by Allaho and should find this unseasonably fast ground against him. The aforementioned Allaho is clearly the one to beat, having won this race in impressive fashion last season, but at a significantly greater price, the win-only odds available about NOTEBOOK look a little too big to ignore.

Henry De Bromhead’s charge failed to beat a rival home in the Hilly Way Chase at Cork last time out, but he had excuses for that showing having been found to be sore behind post-race.

Connections clearly feel that he is well over that issue, and this intermediate distance could now prove Notebook’s optimum. His four top career RPR’s have been posted in field sizes of 6-4-5-5, so this small field looks ideal, as does the ground (three of last four wins recorded on ground described as yielding or better). That latest Cork run aside, Notebook’s form figures under rules in the months of October-January currently read 221111121, and that alone makes his current odds look overgenerous.

The Chapel Field – 3:45, BetVictor Handicap Chase

Course specialist THE CHAPEL FIELD brought his form figures here at Thurles to an impressive 051123 when beaten just 4l over 2m2f last month.

Stepping back up to this distance should suit on that evidence, and although he runs off the same mark of 113 rider Jack Foley can now claim an additional 3lb.

The Chapel Field may not be as unexposed as some in this line-up, but the addition of first-time blinkers may well unlock the improvement required to see him gain a second chase win – particularly if connections decide to ride the 9yo with more aggression on the front end.
