ITV Best Bets on Saturday, January 22nd

The cards at Haydock, Ascot and Taunton make up the live ITV4 action, we have scoured through these to provide our ITV best bets. Check these out below, with our top tips providing extra selections on what promises to be an unmissable day of racing.

Sonigino (1:45 Ascot, SBK Holloway’s Handicap Hurdle)

The French-bred SONIGINO gained two wins for David Cottin last year, and he made a promising debut for current connections when third in a Listed novices’ hurdle at Haydock in November.

He was below his best on handicap debut at Doncaster subsequently, but had excuses for that having raced very keenly out wide throughout off a steady pace.

He participates in Ascot’s extended 2m3f SBK Holloway’s Handicap Hurdle and this should be better run to suit, with a tongue-tie also a fascinating addition considering he had the headgear on for both of those French victories.

Molly Ollys Wishes (2:20 Ascot, SBK Mares’ Hurdle)

This Grade 2 Mares’ Hurdle was last year taken by the smart Roksana, and representing the same yard twelve months later, MOLLY OLLYS WISHES rates a solid proposition.

The 8yo struggled in the Grade 2 Coral Hurdle here when last seen, but she had excuses for that showing and it is notable that all five career wins have come when racing exclusively against her own sex – something she does here.

She remains unexposed over this distance, but was a comfortable winner on her only previous start beyond 3m so clearly stays the trip fine and this rates a fairly modest contest for the grade.

Sam Brown (2:35 Haydock, Peter Marsh Handicap Chase)

A belting renewal of this famous staying handicap and at the prices it looks worth chancing the outsider of the field SAM BROWN.

Anthony Honeyball’s charge was a Grade 2 winner on this card two years ago and although beaten a distance was far from disgraced when third in the Grade 2 Many Clouds at Aintree on seasonal reappearance last month.

Returning to handicaps should suit Sam Brown and the addition of a tongue-tie looks very interesting considering that Sam Brown was beaten just 11l in an ultra-competitive Punchestown Handicap on his only previous start in the headgear.

His yard could hardly be in better form operating at just shy of a 30% strike-rate with their runners this month, with those +39.03 when backed at level stakes.

Fanion D’Estruval (2:55 Ascot, bet365 Handicap Chase)

Venetia Williams’ FANION D’ESTRUVAL produced an RPR figure of 161 when fourth to First Flow in the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase on this card twelve months ago.

That figure was identical to the one posted by Dashel Drasher when he took this race, and Fanion D’Estruval actually bettered that showing when posting an RPR of 164 at Newbury last time out.

Although up 8lb for that almost all of the additional weight is negated by his talented amateur rider’s claim, and as the youngest runner in the field he holds a greater scope for improvement than most.

Yala Enki (3:15 Taunton, BioWaveGo Portman Cup Chase)

YALA ENKI rates one of the stronger bets across the ITV races when he takes the line-up in Taunton’s Portland Cup.

The now 12yo has won the last two renewals of this staying chase, and he looked better than ever when making all to land a competitive Cheltenham handicap on seasonal reappearance in November.

Regular pilot Bryony Frost retains familiarities with this Nickname gelding, and connections have reported this to be his main seasonal target, so expect him to have been trained to the minute for the assignment.

ITV Racing Tips. Bryony Frost can partner the veteran Yala Enki to another Portland Cup victory.

Shishkin (3:35 Ascot, SBK Clarence House Chase)

A stunning clash in prospect here, with SHISHKIN taken to account for the Irish raider Energumene.

Nicky Henderson’s stable star is now unbeaten in six chase starts, looking right at the top of his game when landing the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton last month.

This should be set up perfectly for him with the tearaway Energumene performing front running duties, and therefore expect him to pick up the pieces late on under Nico de Boinville.
