ITV RACING TIPS SATURDAY 1 FEBRUARY AT A GLANCE

1:50 Sandown – CALL ME LORD (8/11, William Hill)
2:05 Musselburgh – MIRANDA (4/1, William Hill)
2:25 Sandown – GOOD BOY BOBBY (4/1, William Hill)
2:45 Wetherby – DOMINATEUR (5/2, Bet365)
3:00 Sandown – ASK BEN (13/2, Unibet)
3:15 Musselburgh – SUMKINDOFKING (7/1, Coral)
3:35 Sandown – CLOUDY GLEN (15/2, William Hill)

1:50 Sandown – Betway Contenders Hurdle (Listed Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m

CALL ME LORD (8/11, William Hill) has to give weight to this field, but Nicky Henderson’s charge can defy his welter burden to collect another success.

The Slickly gelding won the recent International Hurdle at Cheltenham, beating Ballyandy who has won a Grade Two contest since, and he boasts a very good record at this venue where he has won three times as well as being placed on two other occasions from his five starts at the Esher track.

The Seven Barrows trainer has used this contest in the past as a Champion Hurdle stepping stone for Buveur D’air and he could follow a similar path here with the selection who could rubber-stamp his place in the Cheltenham Festival line-up for the Tuesday feature with a win in this contest.

The race doesn’t look the strongest and he ought to prove a tough nut to crack here.

Call Me Lord features in our Saturday ITV Racing tips.

Call Me Lord (green colours) can strike again at Sandown.

2:05 Musselburgh – bet365 Scottish County Hurdle (A Handicap) Cl2 (4yo+) 1m7½f

MIRANDA (4/1, William Hill) looked a potentially useful recruit when winning her first two starts over hurdles last term having arrived at Paul Nicholls’ yard from France; but the Camelot mare shaped as if amiss when disappointing in her hat-trick bid at Wincanton in March where she pulled up.

She made an inauspicious return in heavy ground at Sandown in November, failing to beat a rival home although that reappearance run was probably needed and she might not have handled the ground in any case. But she built on that outing to get back on the winning trail at Kempton over the Christmas period and she can improve again to strike again in this contest.

The third horse home in that race has won since and while the handicapper has hit her with a 9lbs rise in the weights for the win, she looks capable of further improvement and can follow up here.

2:25 Sandown – Betway Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase (Grade 1) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m4f

Laurina has to bounce back from her recent run at Leopardstown where she bled, and so it could be worth chancing GOOD BOY BOBBY (4/1, William Hill) to get back on the winning trail having lost no caste in defeat when last seen at Cheltenham in December.

Nigel Twiston-Davies’ charge was trying to give 5lbs to Mister Fisher in that contest where he was stepping up to this trip for the first time, and he only gave way on the run-in having led over the final fence. The front pair pulled well clear of the rest and the winner of that race has since gone on to win a Grade Two contest readily.

He clearly needs to find another jolt of improvement against Laurina who was impressive on her chase debut when beating Minella Indo; but the Flemensfirth gelding looks worth trying at this higher grade and he could find sufficient enough improvement to feature prominently in this Grade One prize.

2:45 Wetherby – William Hill Towton Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m

DOMINATEUR (5/2, Bet365) was progressive over hurdles last term, rounding off his season with wins at Lingfield and Carlisle, and Oliver Sherwood’s charge has looked at least as good over fences where he is 2-3 over the larger obstacles.

The Desir D’un Soir gelding was still travelling well on his chase debut where he was a faller five out in the Gordon Richards Chase at Carlisle; but he has since registered a pair of wins at Chepsow, latterly beating Clondaw Anchor by almost three lengths over Christmas.

He won a shade comfortably that day and there could easily be more to come from him. He looks a progressive sort who is well worthy of a step up to this level where he can show further improvement and every chance he can register another success.

Oliver Sherwood can win the Towton Novices’ Chase with Dominateur at Wetherby.

3:00 Sandown – Betway Heroes Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m7½f

ASK BEN (13/2, Unibet) won each of his first two starts over hurdles last term, scoring wins at Newcastle and Ayr prior to chasing home Lisnagar Oscar in the Grade Two Prestige Novices’ Hurdle at Haydock.

George Mcpherson’s charge wasn’t disgraced in finishing midfield in the Albert Bartlett, and having switched to handicapping this term he has run two solid races. The Ask gelding finished fourth to Stoney Mountain on his reappearance at Haydock in November, and he showed the benefit of that run to find only Goodbye Dancer too strong latest at Cheltenham last month.

The fourth horse home in that race has won since and he was arguably unlucky not to finish closer having met with trouble in running. He’s only 2lbs higher here and a repeat of that effort could be good enough to see him get back on the scoresheet.

3:15 Musselburgh – bet365 Edinburgh National Handicap Chase Cl2 (5yo+ 0-150) 4m1f

SUMKINDOFKING (7/1, Coral) hasn’t always looked straightforward over fences, but there was nothing wrong with Tom George’s charge latest run in the North Yorkshire National where he found only the reopposing Little Bruce too strong.

The King’s Theatre gelding was trying the trip for the first time and he looked a doughty stayer although he couldn’t quite match the winner for effort where he relinquished the lead jumping the last obstacle. He kept on well though and the pair pulled six lengths clear of the rest.

The handicapper has left him alone following that run so he meets his last-time conqueror on 6lbs better terms for a three lengths defeat and this further step up in trip could unlock another jolt of progress so every chance he can turn the tables with Phil Kirby’s charge now on more suitable ground.

Sumkindofking can win the Edinburgh National for our ITV Racing tips column.

Sumkindofking (yellow cap) can win the Edinburgh National at Musselburgh.

3:35 Sandown – Betway Masters Handicap Chase Cl2 (5yo+) 3m

CLOUDY GLEN (15/2, William Hill) was luckless at Cheltenham last weekend, being forced off the course on the run to the first obstacle, and Venetia Williams’ charge is taken to quickly bounce back from that mishap.

The Cloudings gelding has been steadily progressive over fences although it took him four attempts to get off the mark. That win came in a Haydock match over Secret Reprieve where he made all the running and jumped well in front, and he remains open to further improvement.

Still relatively unexposed as a chaser, he features off a basement mark in this contest and with a bit more luck this time around he could make his presence felt in an open race. Assuming his last mishap wasn’t down to any signs of temperament then he looks worth chancing to make amends here.
