Roger Varian’s Top Racing League Chances

The Racing League is delicately poised going into week three with the top nine teams now covered by a total of just 23 points. One team battling for Racing League supremacy is Team talkSPORT who are currently 4th in the table. They will fancy their chances of edging closer to the summit, however, now the league heads to Lingfield – a track that their trainer Roger Varian holds a superb record at.

With this in mind, we have delved deeper into the chances of the Varian horses running on week three of the Racing League – seeing whether the yard can enhance their already impressive record at Lingfield.

Hey Mr – 5:38 Lingfield (6f)

The Racing League card begins with a competitive 6f handicap that sees the market headed by 5/1 shot Copinet. Roger Varian is operating at an impressive 33% strike-rate with his three-year-old’s at Lingfield in the last five seasons, and he sends HEY MR here in a bid to enhance that.

This son of Territories was a winner on his final start at two, and clearly benefitted from a gelding operation when a respectable fourth at Doncaster last week. He arrives here running off the same handicap mark and should appreciate getting back racing against his own age group.

Musicality – 6:08 Lingfield (6f)

Roger Varian’s next runner comes in the form of MUSICALITY – which runs in the following 6f handicap. Musicality bounced back from three modest turf performances when third on week one of the Racing League at Newcastle a fortnight ago.

The first-time cheekpieces fitted there have been retained, and Musicality remains unexposed on all-weather surfaces. Musicality’s handicap mark has been left untouched since that Newcastle third, and that means that he is still running off his last winning mark.

Breath Of Sun is potentially well-treated off this rating if back to his best, but his recent efforts have been underwhelming.

Lankaran – 7:08 Lingfield (1m)

Backing Roger Varian’s horses blind has proven a profitable angle to follow at Lingfield in the last five seasons (+21.94 to a £1 stake), and the yard holds strong claims of enhancing that with LANKARAN in this evening’s sole 1m handicap.

Lankaran has been limited to just the four starts in his career to date, winning twice, with both victories coming on his only two starts on the all-weather. He prevailed by a shorthead at Kempton when last seen, and that victory came under today’s rider Jack Mitchell.

Brains bounced back to form at Bath last time and remains well-handicapped off a five-pound higher mark – he is feared most.

Lydford – 8:08 Lingfield (1m4f)

Roger Varian’s final runner on the Racing League’s week three Lingfield card comes in the concluding 1m4f handicap with LYDFORD.

This Fastnet Rock gelding failed to see out the two-mile trip at Goodwood on his penultimate outing, yet bounced back to form when a close second dropped back to this 1m4f distance at Newcastle on week one of the Racing League.

He is three pounds higher today yet retains familiarities with jockey Jack Mitchell and remains open to improvement – so rates as one of the more likely winners of this contest.
