NAAS TIPS ON SATURDAY – BEST BETS OVER THE STICKS IN IRELAND
12:50 Naas – BetVictor Fishery Lane Hurdle (Grade 3) (4yo) 2m
This is a cracker with Jeff Kidder, Teauphoo and QUILIXIOS all in the line-up and the latter gets the vote to make a winning return to action having done so last season en-route to winning four times over hurdles which include the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
The Maxios gelding ran below par when last seen at Punchestown behind Jeff Kidder in the Champion 4YO Hurdle, possibly feeling the effects of his campaign and fading into seventh in a disappointing final start. However could do better following a break and he remains with plenty of scope for improvement this season.
Having had a stellar Cheltenham there was something of a cloud over Henry De Bromhead’s stable in the weeks following with the yard going off the boil and while still not firing on all cylinders this term he ought to be capable of another big run and no surprise if he were to bounce back to winning form here.
1:20 Naas – Poplar Square Chase (Grade 3) (4yo+) 2m
ANDY DUFRESNE won his first two starts over fences last term, readily taking a Grade Three contest at Navan prior to posting a solid third behind Monkfish in the Grade One Flogas Novices’ Chase where the longer trip possibly just stretched him.
That was a solid performance and although he failed to back it up next time at Fairyhouse where he was too keen for his own good he looks capable of going well here back from a break given his record fresh.
There could be more to come this term from the Doyen gelding over fences and starting out over the minimum trip on his return can show the seven-year old in a better light; while he made the frame at this venue over hurdles so the track should pose no issues.
On the book he does have a little to find with Captain Guinness to whom he also has to give 7lbs, but he should be in the thick of things on his reappearance and he can pick up the winning thread again.
2:30 Naas – BetVictor Irish EBF Maiden Hurdle (4yo+) 2m3f
ERIC BLOODAXE was one of the leading bumper performers during the 2019/20 season, winning twice but shaping as if amiss behind Appreciate It in a Grade Two at Leopardstown and the Saint Des Saints gelding was absent subsequently for more than one year before returning with a solid effort to finish fourth behind Kilcruit at Punchestown in April.
Joseph O’Brien’s charge had beaten Ferny Hollow on his racecourse debut so he’s clearly one who could still go on to big things and now stepping out over hurdles for the first time there could be plenty to come from him and this looks a decent opportunity for him to make a winning debut over timber.
3:05 Naas – Cavan Developments Home Builders Supporting St. Mary’s GAA Novice Handicap Chase (4yo+ 0-116) 2m4f
BIG DEBATES appears to be getting his act together now over obstacles and Robert Tyner’s charge can continue his progress to win again and bring up the hat-trick.
Having finally got off the mark over hurdles at Ballinrobe in May the Sholokhov gelding improved again back over fences to run out a comfortable winner over Bitview Colin over fences and there may be better still to come in this sphere.
The road hasn’t always been easy for him with his career littered with interruptions, but he remains one with potential for better and while 9lbs higher here following that latest victory he ought to be competitive still and he can mount a bold bid for the hat-trick.
