2022 Phoenix Stakes 1-2-3 Prediction

The Phoenix Stakes is the feature race at the Curragh this weekend and this year’s renewal of the Group 1 has attracted a stellar field. Our expert has delved through the runners to provide his predicted 1-2-3 which you can check out below.

1. BRADSELL (Archie Watson, Hollie Doyle) 7/4

It’s a cracking renewal of the Phoenix Stakes, but in terms of the most likely winner of Saturday’s Group 1, it simply has to be BRADSELL.

Archie Watson’s colt went into plenty of notebooks when bolting up in a York novice on debut in May, and he stepped forward on that showing to land the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot next time out.

This race was immediately nominated as his target afterwards, and the Coventry has arguably turned out to be one of the best juvenile races run at Royal Ascot in recent seasons, with the 2nd (Persian Force), 3rd (Royal Scotsman) and 4th (Blackbeard) all scoring at Group 2 level since.

Two of those reoppose here, but Bradsell looked well on top at the line last time and is surely a Group 1 winner in waiting. Hollie Doyle travels over here to keep the partnership intact and that decision can be justified with Group 1 glory.

2. Blackbeard (Aidan O’Brien, Seamie Heffernan) 9/2

Aidan O’Brien hasn’t managed to land the Phoenix Stakes since 2017, but he has two excellent chances in this year’s renewal, with it arguably a little surprising to see Ryan Moore favour Little Big Bear over BLACKBEARD.

This colt brought his career record to an impressive 4-6 when bolting up in the Prix Robert Papin last month, form which received a boost earlier this week courtesy of the second, and Blackbeard’s stablemate, The Antarctic, taking a Group 3 in Deauville.

Blackbeard can be tricky in the prelims, but he goes particularly well here at the Curragh and is the likely pace angle in this small field.

He was behind Persian Force at Royal Ascot but was surely disadvantaged by his track position near the stands rail where near enough all of the action in the first few days unfolded middle to far side. He might struggle to reverse form with the winner, but if he does blast off in front he can swap placings with Persian Force.

3. Persian Force (Richard Hannon, Rossa Ryan) 6/1

PERSIAN FORCE finished a length and a half behind Bradsell in the Coventry Stakes, but he’s won his three remaining starts which includes an odds-on victory in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket last month.

He had no excuses when runner-up in the Coventry, however, so may struggle to reverse form with the Archie Watson-trained runner.

Ridden more prominently Blackbeard may be capable of flipping the Coventry result, but Persian Force is still fancied to see off Little Big Bear, whose form arguably is a little below the level of the Coventry 1-2-4.
