1:50 Newbury – Betfair Bet In-Play Handicap Hurdle Cl2 (4yo+ 0-145) 3m

VERSATILITY (14/1, Ladbrokes, each-way) has a bit to find on form but the Yeats gelding can improve for this significant step up in trip.

Nicky Henderson’s charge finished fourth in a bumper contest at this venue last March; but having won a Warwick bumper on his hurdles debut in May he hasn’t matched that level although he has had excuses the last twice.

Third on his return from six months off the track at Kempton, he probably needed that run and the heavy ground at Ascot when last seen possibly wasn’t altogether to his liking.

He shaped like a stayer in that contest however, and this step up to three miles could unlock some improvement while the better ground should suit him better than another slog in the mud.

Although he lacks the experience of most of these rivals over hurdles he does remain unexposed and may have more to offer now his stamina is further drawn out.

2:05 Warwick – Agetur UK Kingmaker Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m

NUBE NEGRA (13/8, Unibet) has surpassed his useful hurdles form since being sent chasing, winning at this venue on his chase debut and then following up with an impressive defeat of Encore Champs at Fakeham four weeks later.

Dan Skelton’s Dink gelding enhanced his reputation with a fine runner-up effort behind Esprit Du Large in the Grade One Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown when last seen, keeping on well without quite able to get to the winner.

The pair pulled 13 lengths clear of Grand Sancy who has run well since in Graded company, and he could have further improvement to come over the larger obstacles where he has looked a natural. He can bounce back to winning ways here.

2:25 Newbury – Win Bigger On The Betfair Exchange Chase (Grade 2) (Registered As The Game Spirit Chase) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m½f

Dual-Champion Chase winner ALTIOR (8/15, William Hill) lost his unbeaten record over obstacles when beaten into second behind Cyrname in the Christy 1965 Chase, although he was making his seasonal debut over a trip he hadn’t tried previously.

That run was needed and he’s sure to come on for that outing; while the way he kept on without quite matching the winner suggested he got the trip with few problems.

Nicky Henderson’s superstar chaser has been the subject of glowing reports in recent weeks and if back to his best then he should make a triumphant return to the winners’ enclosure here where he is returned to two miles.

He can show he’s still the one to beat come the Champion Chase in March despite the emergence of Defi Du Seuil with a win in this contest before heading to the Cheltenham Festival next month.

Altior can win the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury on Saturday.

2:40 Warwick – Paddy Power 31 Sleeps To Cheltenham Mares’ Hurdle (Listed Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m5f

LEGENDS GOLD (5/1, Coral) has won four of her last five starts with her only defeat in that sequence coming at Cheltenham in November where she finished sixth behind Jatiluwih having possibly been amiss.

Emma Lavelle’s charge had racked up a hat-trick of wins previously and the Gold Well mare showed the step up to three miles to be of no consequence when getting back on the winning trail at Ludlow last month with a defeat of Ziggy Rose.

The bare form is nothing to write home about, but she did the job well enough and the handicapper was suitably impressed enough to push her up 9lbs for that success. This is tougher than anything she has faced previous but she is worth her place in this higher grade and she can make her presence felt as she bids to win again.

3:00 Newbury – Betfair Denman Chase (Grade 2) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m7½f

NATIVE RIVER (1/3, William Hill) and old foe Might Bite renew rivalry again, but the latter has been a shadow of himself since winning the 2018 Aintree Bowl following his epic Gold Cup duel with Colin Tizzard’s charge.

While Paul Nicholls’ Secret Investor will appreciate the return to this longer trip, the claims of the Indian River gelding are hard to ignore having won the Many Clouds Chase on his seasonal reappearance and he should come on for that effort.

He had endured a disappointing campaign last term, but he had excuses in all three starts and he was set alight by the application of blinkers for his reappearance where he looked much more like his old self.

Assuming the headgear has the same positive effect then he should hold too many guns for this field where a third Denman Chase crown looks to be within his grasp with a clear round.

3:15 Warwick – Paddy Power From The Horses Mouth Warwick Castle Handicap Chase Cl2 (5yo+) 2m4f

TWO TAFFS (7/2, Bet365) proved himself a useful chaser during the 2016/17 campaign, placing in Grade Three and Listed company before winning at Ayr with a defeat of Theinval.

Dan Skelton’s charge returned from six months off the track that year to chase home Double Treasure at Cheltenham; but he was subsequently absent for two years before returning with a creditable third to The Worlds End in the West Yorkshire Hurdle.

The Flemensfirth gelding had had wind surgery prior to that return and he can’t be judged too harshly on his last start in the Ladbroke Trophy Chase at Newbury where he beat only a handful home behiind De Rasher Counter. This is an easier examination however and he’s only 1lb higher here than his last winning mark.

The less severe trip could help him to bounce back having possibly been stretched last time by the stiffer test of stamina and he could be capable of a big run.

3:35 Newbury – Betfair Hurdle (Handicap) (Grade 3) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m½f

Philip Hobbs saddles three in the race and the progressive OAKLEY (16/1, Paddy Power) could prove the pick of the trio.

The Oscar gelding won two of his four hurdles starts last term, beating subsequent winner Cervaro Mix to get off the mark at Ludlow and then follow up at Kempton next time.

Far from disgraced on his reappearance at Cheltenham behind Benny’s Bridge, he might have needed that return from nine months off the track and he was trying to give Not So Sleepy 5lbs when beaten just over two lengths by that rival.

Only beaten a length latest behind Repetitio at Cheltenham in December, he was giving 6lbs to subsequent winner and another of these rivals in Never Adapt; he’s now better off with both those rivals and the better ground here will be more in his favour than recent conditions he’s been contesting over.

A 5lbs rise is a shade harsh given he appeared to idle latest and was run down near the line; but he is one who appears to be going the right way over timber and there may be more to come from him so he is chanced to find further improvement where he can go close in this competitive contest.
