Saturday ITV Racing tips – TV tips for Ascot, Haydock and Wincanton

Brian Healy gives his Saturday ITV Racing tips for the day’s broadcast where seven races from the fixtures at Haydock, Ascot and Wincanton go to post.

The ITV Racing cameras are back in action on Saturday with a line-up of seven races that takes in the pick of the day’s action from three of the afternoon’s racemeetings.

Four races will be shown live from Ascot where the Grade One Ascot Chase is the feature of the afternoon; while there will be two races shown live from Haydock which includes the Grade Three Grand National Trial.

Completing the ITV Racing seven-race line-up is the Grade Two Kingwell Hurdle from Wincanton.

1:50 Ascot – Sodexo Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m
2:05 Haydock – Unibet Rendlesham Hurdle (Grade 2) Cl1 (4yo+) 3m½f
2:25 Ascot – Keltbray Swinley Chase (A Limited Handicap) (Listed Race) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m
2:45 Wincanton – Betway Kingwell Hurdle (Grade 2) Cl1 (4yo+) 1m7½f
3:00 Ascot – Give The Gift Of Ascot Annual Membership Handicap Hurdle Cl2 (4yo+) 2m3½f
3:15 Haydock – Unibet Grand National Trial Handicap Chase (Grade 3) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m4½f
3:35 Ascot – Betfair Ascot Chase (Grade 1) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m5f

All three cards will have to survive morning inspections, but assuming they go ahead then Ed Chamberlain and the team will be on hand again to offer up their usual expert tips, insights and post-race analysis on all of Saturday’s televised racing action.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections and live TV tips for all seven races on the day’s broadcast.

SATURDAY ITV RACING TIPS AT A GLANCE

1:50 Ascot – PYM (5/2, William Hill)
2:05 Haydock – EMITOM (7/2, Bet365)
2:25 Ascot – BALLYOPTIC (11/1, Unibet)
2:45 Wincanton – QUEL DESTIN (3/1, William Hill)
3:00 Ascot – EDEN DU HOUX (13/2, William Hill)
3:15 Haydock – THE TWO AMIGOS (6/1, Bet365)
3:35 Ascot – CYRNAME (4/7, William Hill)

1:50 Ascot – Sodexo Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m

Copperhead appeared to win a shade easier than it appeared when lifting the Mandarin Chase at Newbury when last seen; but PYM (5/2, William Hill) looked a class act when blitzing Imperial Aura by eight lengths at Cheltenham in December and he can improve again to land the hat-trick.

Nicky Henderson’s Stowaway gelding has shown classy form both in bumpers and over hurdles, and he won twice over timber last term as well as make the frame in Grade Two company.

Runner-up on his chase debut at Huntingdon back in November, he has since impressively landed wins over course and distance as well as at Cheltenham and he likely has more in the locker judging on his demolition job latest.

He sets the standard on official ratings and handles these conditions well so with the potential for better still to come he can strike again upped to this level and no surprise to see him land the three-timer.

2:05 Haydock – Unibet Rendlesham Hurdle (Grade 2) Cl1 (4yo+) 3m½f

EMITOM (7/2, Bet365) could be worth chancing to bounce back from his last-of-six runners finish behind Summerville Boy in the Relkeel Hurdle.

Warren Greatex’s yard were quiet around that time and the Gold Well gelding might well have needed the outing in any case which was his first in some nine months.

He had proven to be a hugely progressive sort last term, winning his first four starts in bumpers and over timber prior to chasing home Champ in the Sefton Novices’ Hurdle where he was only beaten around three lengths.

He ought to be sharper for that run and the yard is in much better form now and he is still unexposed over hurdles. Testing ground will be no problem so he could well step up on that reappearance with a better effort here for a yard in much better form now.

2:25 Ascot – Keltbray Swinley Chase (A Limited Handicap) (Listed Race) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m

BALLYOPTIC (11/1, Unibet) could be anchored by his big weight, but this represents a drop in class for Nigel Twiston-Davies’ charge who could successfully defy his top-weight burden and return to winning ways.

The Old Vic gelding has plenty of solid form in the book despite perhaps being let down by his jumping on occasion. But everything came together on his first two starts this term where he was a ready winner at Chepstow on his reappearance before grinding out success in the Charlie Hall Chase.

The ground was possibly too quick for him next time at Haydock although he faced a tough test in the Betfair Chase and can’t be judged too harshly on that run. His next outing saw him complete the course in the Becher Chase although the obstacles took too much of a toll on his jumping and he wasn’t seen at his best.

He’s been given a break and returns to more conventional obstacles here where he drops into a Listed contest. The handicapper has eased him 2lbs in the weights following his Aintree defeat and if coming back to his best then he could go well at a big price in conditions that will prove no issue.

Ballyandy can land a big win for our Saturday ITV Racing tips in the Keltbray Swinley Chase.

2:45 Wincanton – Betway Kingwell Hurdle (Grade 2) Cl1 (4yo+) 1m7½f

QUEL DESTIN (3/1, William Hill) battled well to hold off Call Me Lord in the recent Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown and the Muhtathir gelding could be worth keeping onside to follow up assuming this doesn’t come too soon.

Paul Nicholls’ charge won five straight races last term which included a Grade One at Chepstow prior to posting a creditable fifth behind Pentland Hills in last season’s Triumph Hurdle. He then made a winning return to hurdling when scoring back at Cheltenham in October having had a prior spin on the flat to put him right.

Not seen to best effect in subsequent runs at that venue which included in the Relkeel Hurdle behind Summerville Boy, he bounced back to form in heavy ground at Sandown two weeks ago where he scored by three lengths where he dug deep to hold off the runner-up with the pair pulling six lengths clear of the rest which included the reopposing Zambella.

He has won both starts when faced with heavy ground and conditions again will be no issue here so if none the worse for recent exertions he could prove a tough nut to crack and give trainer Paul Nicholls another win in this race.

3:00 Ascot – Give The Gift Of Ascot Annual Membership Handicap Hurdle Cl2 (4yo+) 2m3½f

EDEN DU HOUX (13/2, William Hill) might have needed his first run back from a shortish break and wind surgery when scoring narrowly at Chepstow last month, but David Pipe’s charge can build on that effort and could do better here with that run under his belt.

The Irish Wells gelding won both his starts in bumper company during the 2018/19 campaign and he subsequently showed some fair form over timber, including when tried in Grade Two company where he ran better than the bare result.

He made all his return to score at Chepstow last time, posting a short-head victory although the front two pulled well clear of the rest and he can improve on that effort where a 4lbs rise in the weights remains workable given he has the potential for further improvement to come.

3:15 Haydock – Unibet Grand National Trial Handicap Chase (Grade 3) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m4½f

A strong renewal of this contest could go the way of THE TWO AMIGOS (6/1, Bet365) who has been running better than his form figures this term suggest.

Jeremy Scott’s charge won three of his first four starts over fences last term which include the Sussex National and he was still travelling well in this race twelve months ago when falling at midway. Having looked in need of the run on his return over hurdles at Uttoxeter, he stepped up on that effort to finish five lengths’ third in the Southern National and then followed up with a very creditable fifth in the Welsh Grand National.

He finished ahead of the reopposing Elegant Escape on that occasion and he can compete here from the same mark so ought to confirm that form with Colin Tizzard’s charge who has been raised 4lbs since.

He could take advantage of this relative featherweight in what is likely to be an attritional contest and he could go close with a clear round.

3:35 Ascot – Betfair Ascot Chase (Grade 1) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m5f

This should be a relatively straightforward Ascot Chase title defence for CYRNAME (4/7, William Hill) who faces an easier task than he did twelve months ago when routing the likes of Waiting Patiently by a wide margin to collect this prize.

Paul Nicholls’ charge made a winning reappearance over course and distance in the Christy 1965 Chase where he became the first horse to beat Altior over obstacles with a commanding display from the front.

The Nickname gelding shaped like a non-stayer over three miles in the King George VI chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, but he finished clear of the third and will be hard to beat with a repeat of that effort dropping back to a more suitable trip.

Heavy ground would be a slight concern but he has shown he can handle soft ground with no issue. Even allowing for underfoot conditions perhaps being more testing than ideal he should have too many guns for his three rivals over whom he has at least 13lbs in hand on official ratings.
