ITV RACING BEST BETS – SATURDAY LIVE TV TIPS FOR KELSO, NEWBURY & DONCASTER
1:15 Newbury – BetVictor Veterans’ Handicap Chase (Leg 3 Of The Veterans’ Chase Series) Cl2 (10yo+ 0-150) 3m2f
Most of these have become increasingly unreliable as they’ve got older and recent winning form is pretty thin on the ground; however VALADOM won on his penultimate start and appears in decent form at present so Richard Hobson’s charge is taken to get back on the scoresheet.
The Dadarissime gelding was a winner over a similar trip to today’s distance at Catterick last January, beating Wishmoor by a wide margin prior to finding only Benny’s Sectret too good at Musselburgh. Having then had some time off he showed the benefit of a spin in France at Strasbourg to win at Newcastle in November with a defeat of Doktor Glaz.
Last seen finishing third over hurdles he should appreciate the return to chasing and Paul O’Brien’s 3lbs claim helps offset his current handicap mark which effectively leaves him just 1lb higher than when posting that win last time.
This is a slightly stronger race than he’s been contesting, but the front-runner will have no issue with the longer trip or the drying ground and he can post a big run here.
1:30 Kelso – bet365 Premier Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) (GBB Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m2f
Several improving and potentially smart rivals on show but MY DROGO gets the vote having impressively won at Newbury on his hurdles debut before landing a Grade Two at Ascot next time and Dan Skelton’s charge can add to his tally here.
The Milan gelding has seen the form of that latest success being franked by the third horse home who went on to win the Betfair Hurdle and there’s likely better still to come after just two hurdles starts.
The drying ground will present no issue given his first hurdles win came on a similar surface to that he’ll get on Saturday and this longer trip is expected to suit.
He does have to concede upwards of 2lbs to some potentially smart rivals but he could be up to the task given he’s still unexposed and having proven himself at this level he could prove a tough nut to crack for his in-form yard so no surprise if he maintains his unbeaten hurdles record with a third straight win.
1:50 Newbury – BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (GBB Race) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m4f
This is competitive but a chance is taken with THE BIG BITE who lost little in defeat when chasing home Ibleo at Doncaster in January and Henry Oliver’s charge could improve back over this longer trip.
A dual-winner over hurdles for Tom George he was lightly raced over fences last term for Tom George, racing just three times but registering a win over this trip at Doncaster prior to finding only Caribean Boy too good on his final run.
Following his stable switch he made a successful return to action at Aintree in November, beating Defi Sacre and his latest run was a solid effort in defeat where he went down by little over three lengths. The third from that race has won well since to give the form a boost.
Only 2lbs higher here the Scorpion gelding is unexposed over fences at this distance and he could give a good account in this open affair.
2:05 Kelso – bet365 Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) Cl2 (4yo+) 2m5f
Flash Collonges could be hard to beat switching to handicaps for a yard that does well here but it may pay to side with MEGA YEATS who showed up well over hurdles for Ruth Jefferson, winning a bumper and two hurdles starts before running with plenty of credit in competitive handicaps at Haydock and Cheltenham.
Absent for more than a year after the latter run which saw her finish seventh behind Dame De Compagnie she ran really well in a jumpers’ bumper at Kempton following wind surgery and back over hurdles here she looks very well handicapped off 124 if building on that promising return.
Low mileage over timber she was a novice winner when rated 135 and trip and ground will be no issue so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a bit run from Mark Walford’s charge and she can get back on the scoresheet.
2:20 Doncaster – Virgin Bet Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (Listed Race) (GBB Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 3m½f
WYNN HOUSE was far from disgraced when finishing fourth in the Bristol Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham when last seen out in December and Alan King’s charge can get back on the scoresheet.
The Presenting mare had won her previous two starts at Bangor and Ludlow and she was stepping up to three miles for the first time when taking in that Grade Two contest latest where she locked horns with the boys.
While she came up short she lost little in defeat and while the form hasn’t stood up well she could prove a tough nut to crack back against her own sex and dropping into Listed company.
2:40 Kelso – bet365 Premier Chase (Listed Race) (GBB Race) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m7½f
ASO was touched off by the reopposing Two For Gold when the pair clashed at Warwick last month and Venetia Williams’ charge could turn the tables now if building on that better performance.
The veteran Goldneyev gelding has been keeping very good company in his career, contesting in Grade Ones although he hasn’t won since taking a Grade Three contest back on New Years’ Day 2019 when beating Happy Diva at Cheltenham.
He failed to fire in his two previous starts this term prior to that better run at Warwick latest and while this longer trip perhaps stretches him he has twice made the frame over three miles in the past.
With a 9lbs pull at the weights from his last encounter with Kim Bailey’s charge he is very well favoured by these weights and while there’s a slight worry over the trip he might be able to reverse Warwick form if lasting home over the longer trip with cheekpieces reapplied.
2:55 Doncaster – Virgin Bet Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl2 (5yo+) 2m½f
ZOFFEE could be worth chancing to bounce back having ran better than the bare result when last seen finishing fourth at Newbury in a race that is working out quite well.
Philip Hobbs’ charge was making his handicap debut on that occasion where he didn’t jump well but still managed to finish fourth where he was beaten nine lengths behind Elusive Belle.
The Zoffany gelding was only beaten one length on his chase debut by reopposing Getaway Trump who had had the benefit of a previous chase run; he stepped up on that initial experience to score next time at Exeter prior to that Newbury run but there’s likely more to come and back from a break he can do better.
His bare form probably demands a shade more from this mark despite easing 1lb following that last run, but he’s still unexposed as a chaser and ought to give a good account of himself here.
3:15 Kelso – bet365 Morebattle Hurdle (A Handicap Hurdle) (GBB Race) Cl2 (4yo+) 2m
A strong renewal of this contest could go the way of Irish raider THE SHUNTER who made his last foray to these shores a winning one when claiming a valuable Grade Three handicap hurdle contest at Cheltenham in November and Emmet Mullins’ charge could follow up that victory back over hurdles.
The Stowaway gelding followed up that victory over very useful yardstick Ballyandy with a solid third over fences during the Dublin Racing Festival, beaten four lengths by A Wave Of The Sea.
He’s 7lbs higher here back over hurdles but there’s likely more to come from him having appeared to win a shade comfortably last time and he ought to go close.
3:30 Doncaster – Virgin Bet Grimthorpe Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl2 (5yo+) 3m2f
Most of these have a question to answer so CANELO gets the vote to get back on the scoresheet having run well in fourth in the Sky Bet Chase here in January.
Alan King’s charge had won two of his previous three starts at Aintree and Wetherby latterly when winnng the Rowland Meyrick Chase from Snow Leopardess and he wasn’t disgraced here when last seen in the valuable Listed race won by Takingrisks.
A couple of late mistakes didn’t help his cause on that occasion but this is an easier task he takes in and he arrives in better form than most of these rivals. Eased 1lb since he ought to go close if reproducing that level of form and he looks to hold big claims here with the better ground no issue while he should have little problem with the extra quarter mile.
Back down in grade and taking on rivals who have something to prove he looks the one to stick with and he can resume winning ways.
