SUNDAY HORSE RACING TIPS – BEST BETS AT SOUTHWELL & MUSSELBURGH
1:55 Musselburgh – bet365 Scottish Triumph Hurdle (A Juvenile Hurdle) (Listed Race) (GBB Race) Cl1 (4yo) 1m7½f
FIVEANDTWENTY is 2-2 over hurdles – both over this course and distance – and the Farhh filly can land the hat-trick here to preserve her unbeaten record.
Donald McCain’s charge was a fair sort on the flat for Mark Johnston, winning three times which includes a victory at this venue and she has looked a potentially smart prospect in both hurdles starts.
She had Saturday winner Breguet Boy almost thirty lengths in arrears on her hurdles debut after which she ran out a two lengths’ victor over Herbiers latest where she made all and won readily despite making quite a serious error early on.
This is a tougher test of her credentials upped in grade but she could prove equal to the task under champion jockey Brian Hughes and the pair can combine for the three-timer here where they can make the most of the weight concession they receive.
2:25 Musselburgh – bet365 Scottish Stayers Novices’ Hurdle (GBB Race) Cl2 (4yo+) 3m
FANTASTIKAS has shown ability in bumpers and over hurdles without managing to win, but the Davidoff gelding can break his duck here and Nigel Twiston-Davies’ charge ought to go close.
Twice runner-up in bumpers from three attempts he has found only one too good on both his starts to date over obstacles, latterly bumping into a potentially smart one at Southwell in December where he was denied by only a neck behind Barbados Buck’s.
That form has been boosted with the winner and third both posting subsequent wins and this slightly shorter trip and sharper track could see him home in front.
He’s proved three miles to be no issue with that Southwell run and likely to have further progress to come ought to be firmly involved in the finish here where he can make the most of the 8lbs he receives from standard-setting Threeunderthrufive who is unbeaten over timber.
2:35 Southwell – Betway Casino Handicap Cl6 (4yo+ 0-65) 1m4f
DREW BREEZE won for this column three days ago when bolting up in a similar contest and quickly turned out under a penalty Ivan Furtado’s charge can strike again.
The Camacho gelding had won over a furlong shorter than this trip two starts previously, beating Loose Chippings prior to a very good third over course and distance behind Straight Ash where he wasn’t seen to best effect.
That form is decent at this level and the selection took no time to get back on the winning trail latest where he tanked through his race to score by an easy five lengths, suited by the way the race developed off a fast pace.
He might not get the same here but given his good spell he could still be well-treated here despite a 5lbs penalty and with the possibility of more to come he looks worth sticking with to go in again.
3:05 Southwell – Bombardier Handicap Cl4 (4yo+ 0-85) 1m
The application of a visor has certainly had a positive effect on DAAFR who is 3-3 since the headgear went on and the Invincible Spirit gelding can continue his winning run.
All three of those successes have come here, twice over seven furlongs and latterly over this trip when scoring under a double penalty late last month to deny Crackling by a head.
He found plenty for pressure that day when challenged and although all out to hold on there could still be better to come from him despite another 4lbs rise in the weights.
This is a tougher test of his credentials stepping back into a Class 4 contest but in his current vein of form he’s hard to ignore and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see another big run from Anthony Brittain’s charge.
3:55 Musselburgh – bet365 Handicap Chase (Northern Lights Staying Chase Series Qualifier) Cl4 (5yo+ 0-120) 3m
EVENT OF SIVOLA has yet to get off the mark over fences since joining Mark Walford from France, but he is an ex-French winning chaser and the Noroit gelding has produced a number of solid runs in defeat for this yard.
Runner-up two starts ago behind a subsequent winner at Catterick to record his sixth straight effort in the frame he was an early casualty at Ayr when last seen out last month, departing at the first fence. However he could be worth chancing to quickly bounce back and his earlier performances give him solid claims in this contest if he can run to a similar level.
He probably wouldn’t need to improve too much on his form in order to take a hand in the finish and with scope still to do better over fences he can post a big effort here.
4:35 Southwell – Betway Handicap Cl6 (4yo+ 0-65) 6f
QAARAAT has been in good form of late, winning two of his last three starts which includes latest over five furlongs at this course and Anthony Brittain’s charge can follow up.
The Acclamation gelding had also beaten Marwani a couple of runs previously and he sandwiched a runner-up effort over this trip in between those victories when beaten only a half-length by Onebaba. That one has won since while his latest success has also been franked by the third and he can uphold form with the runner-up from that last race despite being 2lbs worse off.
He’s yet to win over this trip at this venue but his record here is solid and he was only run down late on his last start at the distance; he could be worth chancing to last home and given his current good spell he can go close.
