SUNDAY RACING BEST BETS – TIPS FOR EXETER & SOUTHWELL
1:50 Southwell – Bombardier Handicap Cl5 (4yo+ 0-70) 1m
STRAITOUTTACOMPTON bounced back from a couple of lesser runs to resume winning ways readily over this course and distance earlier in the month and Ivan Furtado’s charge can follow up.
A two lengths’ defeat of Hotspur Harry was his third course and distance success and came in the wake of a short break with the Compton Place gelding scoring comfortably and there could yet be better to come that can see him defy a 6lbs rise in the weights.
Given his good record here and in the headgear combination he should continue to remain competitive and every chance he can add another course and distance success to his record.
2:10 Exeter – British Stallion Studs EBF “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle (Div II) Cl4 (4-7yo) 2m2½f
KARL PHILIPPE has shaped well on both his starts over hurdles having won a pair of bumpers previously either side of a break and Fergal O’Brien’s charge can get off the mark over obstacles here.
The Kentucky Dynamite has been beaten only a head and half-length respectively in those two hurdles outings which have both came at this venue, latterly going down behind Martinhal last month where he might have won had he not bungled the final flight.
He rallied well however which augurs well for this step up in trip and proven in testing ground he has seen the form of that last run boosted by the third winning next time so with further improvement anticipated he can give a good account of himself here and no surprise if he regains the winning thread with a first hurdles success.
2:20 Southwell – Betway Handicap Cl4 (4yo+ 0-85) 5f
FANTASY KEEPER possibly did too much too soon when disappointing over course and distance last time but the Mayson gelding can quickly bounce back.
Michael Appleby’s charge had won over course and distance the time before when beating Centurion Song by a nose, holding on well to win on the nod and he may have paid the price of racing too close to the pace when last seen here earlier in the month behind Mulzim where he faded in the last furlong to beat only one home.
He can do better here and if able to replicate his earlier winning run under Ben Curtis then he can quickly regain the winning thread.
3:20 Southwell – Betway Selling Handicap Cl6 (4yo+ 0-60) 1m4f
ARIA ROSE has been in good form of late, winning her last two starts at Kempton and the Cityscape gelding can oblige backers with a hat-trick of successes here.
Michael Murphy’s charge has finished a good third on both her runs over this course prior to those wins and her latest success saw him score by a short-head over Be Thankful earlier this month where he was all out to hold on.
Another 3lbs rise in the weights applies a little more pressure in his hat-trick bid but he could yet have more to offer back on this surface and every chance he can collect his three-timer if continuing in his current good spell of form.
3:40 Exeter – Racing TV On Sky 426 Veterans’ Handicap Chase (Qualifier) (Leg 1 Of The 2021 Veterans’ Chase Series) Cl2 (10yo+ 0-150) 3m
BOBO MAC struck his last win more than a year ago when successful at Ludlow but the Whitmore’s Conn gelding could get back to winning ways here.
Tom Symonds’ veteran has made the frame in four of his last six starts, returning from an absence to finish third to Secret Reprieve back in December and then posting a solid sixth behind the same rival in the Welsh Grand National where he didn’t help his cause with a late mistake when still in the mix.
A return to three miles is likely to suit and this is a less searching examination where he’s been dropped 1lb in the weights following his Chepstow run; he could go well then for his in-form yard and no surprise if he makes his presence felt in this contest.
4:10 Exeter – Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Pertemps Hurdle Series Qualifier) (GBB Race) Cl2 (5yo+) 2m7f
It might be worth chancing on PORTRUSH TED bouncing back from his latest run where he pulled up at Newbury in the Long Walk Hurdle with Warren Greatrex’s charge facing an easier task back in a handicap.
The Shantou gelding is unbeaten in his completed starts over hurdles, winning three of his five starts and he shaped as if amiss when last seen in the Ascot Grade One back in December behind Paisley Park where he was pulled up.
He had won his previous start in a handicap on his reappearance at Sandown, beating Storm Arising who has won since and if back to his best he could go close here.
4:20 Southwell – Ladbrokes Watch Racing Online For Free Handicap Cl6 (3yo 0-55) 1m
SMOKEY MALONE did well to only be beaten one length on his fibresand debut over seven furlongs last month, slowly away before running on well and Julia Feilden’s charge can go one better stepped up to one mile for this latest run.
The Outstrip gelding was posting a career-best effort on that occasion having shown only moderate form previously and it might be the switch to this surface helped bring about some improvement.
This additional furlong could help him progress again and raised only 2lbs he can continue to remain competitive in what looks a fairly open race with Dylan Hogan taking off a valuable 3lbs so another big run wouldn’t come as a surprise.
