Horse Racing Tips on Sunday, January 2

There are three meetings spread across Britain on Sunday with the action coming from Newcastle, Plumpton and Ayr. Our expert tipster has produced their best bets across the cards, which make up our advised Sunday Lucky 15.

El Paso Wood (2.20 Plumpton)

David Pipe goes mob handed with the five runners in this year’s renewal of the Sky Sports Racing Sussex National Handicap Chase – all entrants running in the silks of Judith Wilson. Jockey bookings may suggest that D’Jango is the stable first string, but preference is instead for EL PASO WOOD.

A multiple winner in France earlier this year, the 7yo was somewhat ambitiously pitched into the Becher Chase on stable debut, where he ran from 19lb out of the weights and got no further than the second fence.

His sights were lowered significantly at Ffos Las last month, and El Paso Wood finished better than the bare result in fifth. David Noonan now takes over in the saddle and a nice racing weight of 10st 6lb makes him look an attractive bet at the prices.

Sunday Lucky 15 Tips. David Pipe can land the Sussex National with El Paso Wood.

One Night In Milan (2.30 Ayr)

Fit from a spell handicapping on the flat earlier this year, ONE NIGHT IN MILAN has run to a consistent level in his two starts since sent back over hurdles and looks worth backing in Ayr’s Golf Inn Prestwick Handicap Hurdle.

The concession of 22lb to the progressive Wakool proved too demanding at Musselburgh latest, yet that gap is now down to 10lb, and the return to Ayr (winner here in October) looks a notable plus.

Softer ground also won’t inconvenience a horse who was third in a Grade 2 on heavy earlier in his career, and although Brian Hughes now jumps ship Sean Quinlan looks a notable alternative with 11 of his previous 18 rides for the yard finishing in the first four.

Silent Assistant (2.55 Plumpton)

Emma Lavelle’s SILENT ASSISTANT lost his way over hurdles last season but being a former point winner was always expected to improve for the switch to fences and he rates the best bet in the Off The Fence On youtube.com/attheraces Handicap Chase.

The 7yo Sans Frontieres gelding built on a modest debut in this discipline when a close up sixth at Lingfield last time out.

That run came in a 0-120 handicap, yet he drops to 0-110 level here and has a first-time visor added. Regular pilot Tom Bellamy retains the partnership and considering that he once went close in a competitive Cheltenham handicap off a mark of 117 over hurdles, this chase rating of 111 has the potential to underestimate him.

Sunday Lucky 15 Tips. Silent Assistant looks a solid proposition for Emma Lavelle.

Nashville Nipper (3.30 Plumpton)

The Zoe Davison Memorial Handicap Hurdle can go to NASHVILLE NIPPER, who shaped as though an extended 2m5f was a little beyond his stamina reserves when third at Fontwell last time out.

Dropping back to the minimum should suit on that evidence, and it’s easy to forget that this 8yo was just three and a half lengths off subsequent Grade 2 winner Lossiemouth at Ascot in October.

A return to anywhere near that level of form should see him far too good in this 0-115 Class 4 handicap, with James Bowen sticking around for the ride in this closing race.
