Sunday’s Irish horse racing tips

Weather permitting Sunday’s Irish racing will play host to a quality racecard over the sticks and we’ve picked out our best bets at Thurles.

Sunday’s sole fixture in Ireland comes over the sticks with a seven-race card that features some classy Graded action where there’ll be a few Cheltenham Festival contenders on show.

That is assuming the fixture passes a morning inspection, but assuming the meeting gets the green light we’ve looked through the fixture to pick out our best bets at Thurles.

2:00 Thurles – Horse & Jockey Hotel Chase (Grade 2) (6yo+) 2m4f

This looks an excellent contest with Allaho, Battleoverdoyen, Easy Game and Annamix all turning out with Willie Mullins saddling four of the seven runners.

Allaho will be bidding to get back on track and the drop back in trip will suit having been stretched by three miles in recent outings and could prove tough to beat. However at much bigger odds a chance is taken on the improving ELIMAY to find further improvement over fences and the Montmartre mare should have been sharpened up by her reappearance at Punchestown in November.

A smart hurdler in France prior to joining this yard she proved progressive over the smaller obstacles for Willie Mullins during the 2018/19 season where she won twice and also finished sixth to Roksana in the Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Switched to chasing last term she won both her starts in good fashion, taking a Grade Three contest at Cork prior to scoring over course and distance last January in a Grade Two where she ran out a nine lengths’ winner over Cut The Mustard.

This will demand a good deal more taking on her high-class stablemates Allaho and Easy Game as well as Battleoverdoyen; but there could be plenty more in the tank and she can continue to improve back over fences while she gets weight from all but one of her rivals which could prove an advantage.

2:30 Thurles – Handicap Chase (5yo+) 2m5½f

Dual-hurdles winner JACK DILLINGER got reward for some decent efforts over fences when successful over this course last month and Joseph O’Brien’s charge can follow up.

The Westerner gelding had finished runner-up two starts previously at this venue and he was bouncing back from a lesser run over the minimum trip at Fairyhouse when getting the better of Scheu Time over 2m 2f when last seen here.

The veteran had travelled well into that contest and found plenty under pressure when challenged to land the win and while he’s 6lbs higher in the weights the step back up in trip could help offset his additional burden and he can go close again now he’s got his head in front in this sphere.

3:00 Thurles – W.T. O’Grady Memorial Irish EBF Novice Hurdle (5yo+) 2m7f

GENTLEMANSGAME made an excellent first impression when running out a wide margin winner on his hurdles debut at Cork and Mouse Morris’ charge can double up despite taking a marked step up in trip.

The Gentlewave gelding had won between the flags previously for Donnchadh Doyle prior to joining this yard and on his first hurdles start he trounced Mahons Glory by twenty lengths, staying on strongly having gone clear with another rival.

He had a potentially useful sort from Willie Mullins’ yard well in his wake and there ought to be even more to come as his stamina is drawn out and this step up to three miles is unlikely to faze him given his point-to-point background.

Having looked a good prospect in that first hurdles run he can progress and it would be no surprise if he were to strike again.

3:30 Thurles – Connolly’s RED MILLS Irish EBF Auction Maiden Hurdle (4yo+) 1m7½f

VINTAGE PROSECCO won a Limerick bumper on his second start for this yard following his switch from the point-to-point ranks and Gavin Cromwell’s charge showed up well switching to hurdles for his last run at Down Royal in December where the Arctic Cosmos gelding found only one too good in Feelgood Island.

He most of the running that day but perhaps raced a shade too freely although he went well for a long way and only folded late on to go down by a couple of lengths with the pair pulling twenty lengths clear.

That form has taken a couple of knocks but the experience won’t have been lost on him and with further progress likely he ought to go well in this contest.
