THURSDAY GALWAY FESTIVAL TIPS – DAY FOUR SELECTIONS

5:15 Galway – Guinness Open Gate Brewery Beginners Chase (5yo+) 2m6½f

DOCTOR DUFFY has shaped with some promise in his two starts over fences, building on a chase debut fourth at Tipperary to chase home Macgiloney latest at Roscommon.

The Craigsteel gelding showed some fair form over timber, winning three times in 2019 and not disgraced in a couple of stronger contests which inlcuded in a Listed contest.

There’s a suspicion he bumped into an above-average rival when last seen and this could be a decent opportunity for him to open his account at the third attempt given he and the winner had pulled clear of the rest.

He could have more to offer still as a chaser and every chance he can get off the mark now.

6:15 Galway – Arthur Guinness Handicap Hurdle (4yo+ 80-109) 2m

The race at Down Royal might have come too soon for FIGHT FOR LOVE on Boxing Day past where the Fuisse gelding could only finish seventh behind Magic Sea. That run came just 12 days on from a hard-fought verdict at Fairyhouse.

Gordon Elliott’s charge returns from a break and there’s a suspicion he still has some improvement to come so he could well progress as a relatively unexposed type.

A mark of 99 doesn’t look unduly harsh and the form of his Fairyhouse win is fair; this contest then should be within his scope and if fully revved up ahead of his return then it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see him bounce back with a solid run under Davy Russell.

6:45 Galway – Guinness Galway Hurdle (Grade A Handicap) (4yo+) 2m

It could be worth chancing WONDER LAISH to turn the tables with Aramon and Petit Mouchoir from their recent encounter in the Grimes Hurdle and Charles Byrne’s charge can come out on top here.

The Halling gelding finished third to that pair with Aramon scoring the win; but the selection might just have needed the run and he arguably was given too much to do having been held up at the rear but finishing off the race with running left to be beaten around eight lengths.

He’s still relatively unexposed over hurdles having had just six starts in this sphere; but he’s a three-time hurdles scorer and racing off the same mark as last time he can build on his recent return to action to land the win in this competitive contest where a likely stronger pace will certainly suit him.

Given that last run came on the back of 17 months off then he’s entitled to strip fitter for the outing and he can prove a different proposition now.

7:45 Galway – Open Gate Pure Brew Handicap Hurdle (4yo+) 3m

TUNE THE CHELLO appeared to win a shade cosily on her reappearance in an maiden hurdle at Killarney earlier in the month and the Ask mare can build on that success switching to the handicap ranks.

Henry de Bromhead’s charge had finished runner-up in a point to point contest prior to joining this yard and she had made the frame on all three starts over hurdles during the winter prior to having a break.

She returned to action earlier in July to strike by three lengths from Mystery Stowaway over a trip just short of this and the form of that win has been franked by the runner-up and fourth horses both going on to score subsequent wins.

An initial rating of 109 on her handicap debut might prove workable and with the potential to further improve as a lightly-raced sort then she can follow up here.
